AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY, HERITAGE & CULTURE (NHCAAHHC or Commission)

Committee Members Present: (Virtually) - Marcus Lacewell, Linda Thomas, Christopher Eaton, Tracion
Flood, Bernice Johnson, Manuel Lloyd, Deborah Maxwell, J’vanete Skiba, Cynthia Pershia, and Stephanie
Walker.
Ex-Officio –Jan Davidson, Historian
Absent: Angela Gaines, Sandra Oglesby (Excused), Brenda Fong, Linda Thompson, Chief Equity &
Diversity Officer
Staff Present: Travis Corpening, Diversity & Equity Specialist and Tomeka Jarreau, Administrative
Specialist
I.Call to Order– Bernice Johnson called the meeting to order at 4:05 pm. Quorum established.
II.Approve Agenda –Stephanie Walker motioned to approve the agenda; Linda Thomas, seconded.
Motion passed unanimously.
III.Approve Minutes –Bernice Johnson previous meeting minutes; Deborah Maxwell ,seconded.
Motion passed unanimously.
IV.Public Comments – None
Introduction of staff members: no new staff members
V.
Old Business–
A. Committee Reports (Chairs) -
a. Cemetery – Travis talked to Christopher about raising funds for the project;
seeking funding from those who may be interested in the project.
b. Education – J’vanete Skiba mentioned scheduling a joint meeting with the
research committee.
c. Outreach –No update.

d. Research – Stephanie Walker: Joint meeting to talk about project, regarding the
ILM Air Port mural: Contact airport. Spoke to Mark Ferinella for information on
clinical educational and historical information. Mention of contacting the
tourism bureau of the Chamber of Commerce about the visitors guide.
B. Committee Next Meeting Dates
a. Each group will contact Mr. Lloyd and Ms. Thompson regarding dates and times
of meetings outside regular commission meetings.
VI. New Business
A. Possible Speaker, Guest or Presentation for next meeting – Suggestions – Mrs.
Tammy Beasley – (NHC Register of Deeds)
B. Evelyn Bryant: President of chair of Wilmington History commission, Joint city
/county citizens’ advisory committee. Call in to the Advisory Board regarding
policy changes to neighborhood schools.
VI. Announcements
A. Jan Davidson : Traveling Exhibit of African American Soldier until January 8th,2021
B. Congratulations to Stephanie Walker our secretary who was recently elected to NHC
School Board.
