HomeMy WebLinkAboutAAHHC Meeting Minutes June 12 2024 NEW HANOVER COUNTY COMMISSION ON AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY HERITAGE & CULTURE MEETING MINUTES JUNE 12, 2024 Committee Members Present Others Present Veronica Carter-Edwards Jan Davidson Brenda Fong Travis Corpening Van Dempsey Deborah Maxwell Linda Thomas Patricia Smith Daniel Jones Cindy Pershia Kiara Bannerman Linda Thomas called the meeting to order at 4:08 pm. She announced that Marcus Lacewell, Vice Chair, had resigned due to his workload. Agenda Approval – Approved by Veronica; Seconded by Cindy Brochure – Was passed around for everyone to view and vote to move forward with printing/posting to website  Travis – Explained that it may be a good idea to have a video for people/tourist who may not have access to the brochure; he showed us the video  Jan – Suggested to edit the brochure to use “New Hanover County” instead of “Wilmington” for branding being that the commission is a county commission who reports county history  Van – Suggested if we do a booklet to do it digitally so it can be updated easier and print the booklet/brochure ever-so often to accommodate updates (i.e every 3 months)  Veronica – Motioned to “start with trifold brochure with the history of NHC to go out as volume 1 announcing the electronic booklet to go out in the future” (motion was not seconded)  Van – Asked Travis how much is set aside in the budget. Travis stated he knows the county’s budget/range but not the specifics to this committee at this time. o Van suggested to create a 5 x 7 postcard with the website and QR code in an effort to use funds in the budget before the fiscal year ends o Jan – Suggested that the purpose of the commission be on the postcard; Deborah suggested we edit the purpose so that it fits on the postcard and is not too wordy  Cindy – Motioned to “print the post cards with the QR Code, mission, and website before July st 1 when the fiscal year ends in order to take advantage of the funds we have for this fiscal year o Deborah seconded Civil Rights Trail  We will have to look at submitting during the next submission window Black History Museum Trip  NHC DEI will handle the bus rental  Museum does not have a cafeteria  Veronica read aloud the email that was sent with pricing and location info Pine Forest Cemetery  Travis suggested we have someone come speak about their tours and the committee assisting them with creating a brochure o Veronica – suggested we partner with the commission on tourism to get brochures and postcards out; Travis suggested we attend a meeting Juneteenth  Brenda & Veronica – announced upcoming Juneteenth events Community Announcements  September 14 – NHC NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet  September 29 – There will be a march from the western part of NC that will end in Wilmington; Deborah will send more info on this event Last Remarks  Jim Downey will not be moving forward with the street marker and asked that we reach out to Jan  Linda Thompson – Wants the committee to have a banquet and reach out to individuals in the community to award people who support the commission; contacted Queen Quet but they are currently having some issues Meeting adjourned 5:11pm – Linda Thomas, seconded by Van
