NEW HANOVER COUNTY COMMISSION FOR WOMEN

l. Call to Order, Roll Call Sheila Evans called the meeting to order at 4:02pm.
Attendance: Sheila Evans, Bridget Tarrant, Olivia Thames, Tracey Newkirk, Hayley Jensen, Debbie Todd, Judge Robinson, Lindy Ford
Absent: Velva Jenkins, April Scott, Tara Hix
Also Present: Tomeka Jarreau (NHC Office of Diversity and Equity), Amy Schlag (City of Wilmington)
II. Approve Amended Agenda Motion made by Sheila, seconded by Debbie.
lll. Approve March Minutes with addendum- Motion made by Sheila, seconded by Debbie.
V. Old Business
1. Pulse Survey Update- Sheila requested Tara to compile survey results/data, she accepted and will work with
Anna Casey of Cape Fear Collective. Sheila will reach out to Travis, from NHC County office for a QR code
(that will not expire).
2. Budget Updates Tomeka Jarreau reported that there was no update regarding the Commission budget for
next year. She will keep us updated and Sheila will keep it as an agenda item.

3. YWCA Health Summit April 11 Hayley and Bridget briefly discussed the summit. Bridget to share action
items with the Commission.
4. Updates on NC Council for Women Conference August 28, 2024 Judge Robinson shared that the State

NC Council for Women meets May 3, updates on the August conference to follow. The Conference will be
offered live and virtually. Danielle Carmen from State NC Council For Women will email our Commission
members invites to the event. We discussed using the old Pulse Survey results for possible topics to be
covered at the Conference. Judge Robinson requested that we send her any suggestions for topics we would
like discussed at the Conference. She also discussed the history and purpose of NC CFW, including the
Annual reports and the COVID report.

5. Any Old Business/Updates: Debbie reported that the Girl Scout Balloon Project is moving forward. Filming

with the Girl Scouts and NHC is set for May 11 (further details TBD) with social media campaign starting in
June.
Vl. New Business
1. Event, March 2025: We will coordinate with Linda
Thompson, ideas include a luncheon with pertinent speakers.

2. Other New Business/Announcements Tracey shared that MED week will be October 7-15 this year with
a luncheon and fireside chat on October 11. Speakers during the fireside chat will include Dr. Gloria Shealey
and her daughter with Sheri Shaw Leavens as the facilitator. NHC CFW invited to host a table at the event.

3. Junior League , 5-9pm at the Little Dipper in downtown Wilmington.

4. NHC CFW was invited by Liz Carbone, Chair of CRAC, to participate in a joint meeting between all 4

commissions that NHC DEI office staffs on Tuesday, May 28 at 5:30. The Commissions include: Community
Relations Advisory Committee (CRAC), the Hispanic Latino Commission and the Commission on African
American Heritage and Culture. The goal of the meeting is to see what the other Commissions are doing.
Rae Hunter-Havens, Director of NHC Board of Elections will discuss any new laws. This would take the place
of our regular May meeting. Sheila made the motion which was passed to change our May meeting date

from May 22 to May 28.
