HomeMy WebLinkAboutNHCCFW July 2024 Minutes.docx NEW HANOVER COUNTY MANAGER’S OFFICE NEW HANOVER COUNTY COMMISSION FOR WOMEN NHC Government Bldg., Conference Rm. 118/ Online via Microsoft Teams July 27, 2022 – 4:00 PM Members present: Velva Jenkins, Sheila Evans, April Scott, Judge Robin Robinson (ex-officio), Jane Birnbach, Debbie Todd, Bridget Tarrant, Mireya Lupercio and Bhairavi Jeganathan Members absent: Meaghan Dennison (excused) NHC staff: Tomeka Jarreau, Monica Rohena WCC staff: Joe Conway Guest: Cassie Lampley, President, Feminist Student Alliance, UNCW Call to Order - Sheila Evans called the meeting to order and called the role starting at 4:01 p.m. I. Amend Agenda and Approve Agenda- Sheila Evans makes a motion to amend the agenda to reflect approving agenda prior to discussion of election results for 2022-23. All approved the amended agenda. II. 2022-2023 Officer Elections- Chair- Sheila Evans, Vice-Chair- Debbie Todd, Secretary-Bridget Tarrant III. Call to Order & Roll Call IV. Approval of Minutes - Sheila Evans made a motion to approve the June minutes, seconded by Jane Birnbach. All approved the Minutes. V. Guest Speaker – Cassie Lampley, President, Feminist Student Alliance (FSA), UNCW – Cassie stated the FSA is a chapter of Planned Parenthood (PP). Services will still be provided for reproductive care on campus. FSA’s focus is on sex education, abortion access, Diversity and Inclusion and providing a safe place @ UNCW. FSA partners with multiple organizations on campus such as LGBTQA+, Asian Student Assoc. FSA works tables in prominent location on campus with information on their focus areas. Historically they hold monthly meetings which will be increased to 2x/month Fall ’22 semester. Two meetings/year focus on voting. Community service includes extensive volunteering for PP. They have no current advisor. FSA has male members who primarily volunteer at events. Cassie’s 2 main initiatives are: inclusion of LGBTQA+ people on campus and bringing in speakers on their issues, local speakers preferred. NHCCFW (C4W) support requested: have C4W’s name incorporated into their events/activities. Cassie will share events with C4W. C4W members questions/comments include Mireya’s suggestion to connect with Centro Hispano, Velva will connect FSA with YWCA, FSA does work with Care Center (domestic violence), Bhairavi suggested workshops on political participation, Joe will connect Cassie with the City of Wilmington’s new Equity and Inclusion specialist, Amy Schlag. Cassie stated FSA is connected with the LGBTQA+ center and the Chief Diversity Officer at UNCW’s Diversity and Inclusion, Donyell Roseboro, PhD. VI. Sub-Committee Reports a. Legislative- Bridget and Sheila discussed which issues C4W should address in upcoming mid-term elections- Healthcare/Medicaid expansion, Mental Health, Reproductive rights, ERA (already completed in 2022). C4W to ask UNCW students’ opinions on what areas C4W should address when present at FSA events. Sheila did reach out to Ted Davis again to meet w/C4W at a time convenient for him. b. Public Education- Mireya and Vanessa Gonzalez met re: Vanessa’s August guest speaker talk. Mireya inquired about any new Pulse survey results. Sheila will reach out to Meghan. c. Programs- Velva, April and Jane met to discuss planning for next year with 2 program sessions tentatively set for 2023. March- Child care, Family safety and Women’s healthcare. August- Women’s Equality Day (WED). There is insufficient time to plan a 2022 WED event. This year C4W created a WED post, all attendees agreed on the post and Tomeka will post to NHC’s Office of Diversity and Equity Facebook page 8/25/22. VII. Old Business - Sheila Evans, Chair 1. Logo is posted on the website. Sheila ordered name tags and Tomeka/Linda is ordering a tablecloth with the new NHCCFW logo. 2. Status of NC House of Rep. Davis- Sheila Evans did reach out to Ted Davis again to meet w/C4W at a time convenient for him. Shelia has not received a response as of today, July 27, 2022 3. Speaker for August meeting- Vanessa Gonzalez. September- Debbie Todd to check with Girl Scout’s MLK troop. Members from the Commission for Women to speak on nd their professional background. Debbie Todd was the first speaker on June 22 and th Bridget Tarrant was rescheduled for August 24 meeting along with Mireya. September is Sheila Evans. 4. Update on the Period Product Project-Bhairavi stated no new updates 5. Equity Ball Sponsorship secured st 6. Planning workshop set for August 31, 2022, location: TBD 7. Any Old Business/Updates- Debbie requested that NC Coastal Pines Girl Scout Mia Blackwelder’s (June guest speaker) balloon project be called “Balloon Release Policy”. Linda Thompson is following up with legal dept re: C4W’s ability to endorse this. VIII. New Business - Sheila Evans, Chair 1. Sponsor- CONNECT event in partnership with the NHC Office of Diversity and Equity was discussed. All agreed that C4W should sponsor. Tomeka reported this will be in 2023, she will clarify with Linda T. 2. 2022 Speaker Ideas/Suggestions- Sheila will follow up with Linda re: Ashley Lomboy as a future guest speaker. See section VII, #3 3. Inspiration award-Will be presented at Wilmington City Council meeting next June – will seek to be on the agenda. Award Criteria TBD, Sheila to send email to members to think th of criteria to be discussed further at August 24 meeting. Some criteria suggested: any gender, someone who inspires women/girls. Discussed having a similar process as the Equity Awards and YWCA’s Women of Achievement awards (request nominations from community, have independent selection committee). Decided to present award in June of each year (end of the fiscal year). 4. Other New Business- Calendar updates: November and December C4W meeting dates thst changed due to holidays, November 30 and December 21. IX. NHCCFW Member Speaker- unintentionally skipped, Bridget Tarrant in August X. Public Comments - Sheila Evans recognized that no one was present for public comment. XI. Adjourn - Sheila Evans made a motion to adjourn the meeting adjourned at 5:04pm Next meeting is August 24, 2022, at 4:00 at the Government Center, Conference room 118. We will also have an option to join virtually.
