HomeMy WebLinkAboutNHCCFW January 2024 Minutes.docx NEW HANOVER COUNTY COMMISSION FOR WOMEN A Joint City-County Commission NHC Government Building – Room 138 January 24, 2024– 4:00 PM l. Call to Order, Roll Call – Sheila Evans, Chair, 4pm - There was a quorum and the following were present: Olivia Thames, Sheila Evans, Debbie Todd, Lindy Ford, Tracey Newkirk, Velva Jenkins, Bridget Tarrant, Judge Robin Robinson, April Scott. II. Approve Agenda – January 2024 – a motion to approve the agenda was made by Sheila Evans and seconded by Bridget Tarrant, all approved. lll. Approve Minutes – December Meeting Minutes were approved as amended by a motion made by Sheila Evans and seconded by Debbie Todd IV. Sub-committee Reports– Sheila Evans, Chair Discussion – Sheila Evans brought forth discussion to discontinue Subcommittees in favor of incorporating the work of the subcommittees into the general meetings at this time. The County prefers that we pause the Subcommittee meetings at this time instead of removing them completely. Sheila made a motion to pause separate Subcommittee meetings at this time and the motion was seconded by Lindy Ford. All were in favor. V. Old Business 1. A Safe Place Presentation – Can we Talk: Community Awareness – Olivia Thames - This is Human Trafficking Prevention Month. A Safe Place needs volunteers who would need to do a $10 background check first. They also need personal products (items are posted on their website). Kathleen, their Director, gave a training that both Sheila and Olivia were able to attend last Saturday at Ambassadors of Christ’s facilities. 2. Updates on the Period Product Project /Product Drive– Sheila Evans spoke with Allie Moore of the Junior League (also local attorney) and she has connected us with Shameka Kemp who will be our contact with the Junior League on partnering with them in some way for International Women’s Month. 3. Budget Updates – Sheila Evans – Sheila will turn in a request for $4500 from the county for sponsorships, a table-top sign and some miscellaneous items. T-shirts will not be sponsored by the county. We will purchase those ourselves. 4. NHCCFW Logo Shirts – Debbie Todd - Debbie requested that everyone who wanted a t-shirt (really polo shirt) please email your size and preferences to her for one group order through Queensboro. 5. Tabletop Sign – Tomeka Jarreau, NHC Office of Diversity & Equity - Amy Schlag suggested that we use the Logo Hub for a table top display. They are a local vender and it will likely cost $65. 6. Tablecloth – Sheila Evans – we may request this from the city. 7. NHCCFW Flyer -Tara Hix – Tara worked on a Rack Card (small, thick flyer about the C4W). Sheila will email it to us all for comments. The County should be able to create these for us. It will have both the City and County info and logos present. 8. Survey – Sheila Evans – The updated survey needs to address homelessness, mental health, physical health and more. Velva, Bridget, Lindy and Debbie volunteered to revise and report next month. 9. Women’s International Month – March – Sheila Evans, Judge Robinson – The North Carolina thth Commission for Women is holding a one-day summit on either the 28 or 29 of August, which will be sponsored by the NC Council for Women, giving the Status of Women Report and will highlight key findings. They are still looking for a key-note speaker. They also heard a speaker from Duke about what other women’s commissions are doing. There was a discussion about the lack of funding for early childhood service. Robin will update us again on 2/28/24, th 10. YWCA Health Summit – April 11 – Sheila Evans/Bridget Tarrant – YWCA is also sponsoring a Pitch Competition. Vl. New Business 1. Further discussion about a Day Camp at UNCW – Sheila Evans - This would be a huge undertaking for us and we may need to partner with other organizations to bring this back to life. 2. Resiliency Task Force Statement of Support – Bridget Tarrant/Debbie Todd – This is an organization we need to be a part of more visibly. Sheila made motion to include our logo with our membership. Bridget/Debbie will look into what we need to do to add our logo. 3. Other New Business/Announcements – Olivia Thames – hosted a little celebration and provided birthday cards for those of us who celebrated birthdays this month. April offered to help her in the future. Olivia also provided more information about the event at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church on Princess Place on 3/2/24. Meeting was adjourned at 5:27pm
