HomeMy WebLinkAbout2025-04-22 NHCHLC Minutes NEW HANOVER COUNTY HISPANIC/LATINO COMMISSION Location: Government Center, Room 136 April 22, 2025 – 5:00pm Commissioners in attendance: Andres Afanador, Amanda Boomershine, Natalie Picazo, Gustavo Rodea, Edelmira Segovia, Helen Tarokic Staff in attendance: Monica Rohena Commissioners absent: Joe Casares, Lambeth Chalk, Gabe Guerra, Janeth Howard, Maria Rodriguez I) Call to Order and Agenda II) Approve Agenda  Approved III) Chair Comments  Amanda read Joe’s message, thanking Helen and Gabe for their service to the commission. IV) Committee Updates a. Information and Civic Engagement Subcommittee  Need new subcommittee chair as Helen’s last day is today.  Last meeting was in February. b. Advocacy for Public Education Subcommittee  Last meeting was April 8.  Would like to see what the Governor’s Council on HL Affairs is focusing on.  Brainstormed ideas for Su Condado video.  Support bilingual education in NHC, including enrollment at International School at Gregory. c. Language Access Subcommittee  Not in attendance. d. Health and Wellness Subcommittee  Met in April.  Visiting community clinics and trying to get Novant’s Hispanic/Latino staff & physician network V) Old Business a. New Membership Update  Rafael Toro nd  2 new member will be named at May NHC commission meeting. Helen’s resignation was not received in time for the April meeting even though she sent it on March 8. b. Su Condado Update  Next episode will be with NHC dental  Scheduling has been a challenge, but Joe is going to do a general recording in May; with no subcommittee recordings c. Nametags, Tablecloth, Flyer  The nametags were never ordered. Monica was asked to request a written reason for why the nametags were never ordered. Other commissions have nametags.  We will have access to a NHC tablecloth for the May 3 Community Resource Fair.  Flyer – Edel has a one-page, bilingual flyer that she will share for us to update  Tall tower display d. What is our legacy? o Review annual reports o Our commission is not set up to provide direct services; we are supposed to guide the NHC Commission and Office of DE to better serve the H/L community o Have commission table at fairs and festivals to get the word out about our commission \[could be a focus of the Information and Civic Engagement Subcommittee\] VIII) Upcoming Events  4/26: FAID, 4 – 7pm  4/27: FAID, 2 – 5pm  4/29: Siembra ICE Watch Training, 6:30pm, RSVP: http://tiny.cc/wilmington29  5/3: Community Resource Fair, 11am – 2pm, Maides Park  5/8: Latino Alliance meeting at the Food Bank @ noon  6/9: Latino Alliance meeting via Zoom @ noon  7/2: Latino Alliance meeting at CFCC @ noon IX) Public Comments  Unitarian Universalist of Wilmington o hosting the Siembra NC ICE Watch Training on April 29, 6:30pm; RSVP at http://tiny.cc/wilmington29  What is the purpose of the NHC HLC? It would be great if the greater community knew about this commission. Who can join? o Provide guidance to NHC Commission o Advocate for issues related to the Hispanic / Latino community o Bridge between the community and the elected commissioners o Prospective members apply and the commissioners select new members as members rotate off X) Adjourn  Meeting was adjourned at 6:10pm NEXT MEETING – May 27 – 5:00pm, Government Center Room 136
