Home My WebLink About2025-06-16 RM ExhibitsExhibit A91 Book) —Page 1_5st PROCLAMATION FOR PURPLE HEART DAY ON AUGUST 7, 2025 WHEREAS, in August 1782, General George Washington, Commander in Chief of the Continental Army, established the "Badge of Merit," which became the forerunner of the Medal of Honor and inspired the modern Purple Heart; and WHEREAS, the Purple Heart is awarded to those who have been wounded or killed while serving the United States against opposing armed forces; and WHEREAS, National Purple Heart Day, observed annually on August 7, honors the bravery and sacrifice of military personnel who have been wounded or killed in combat while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces; and WHEREAS, since its inception and through multiple wars and conflicts, the Purple Heart has been awarded to more than one million service members wounded or killed in defense of our nation; and WHEREAS, the mission of the Military Order of the Purple Heart is to foster goodwill and camaraderie among combat -wounded veterans, promote patriotism, support vital legislative initiatives, and, most importantly, provide service to all veterans and their families; and WHEREAS, the Purple Heart Foundation continues to honor and support our nation's most dedicated heroes. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that the New Hanover County Board of Commissioners hereby recognizes Thursday, August 7, 2025, as "Purple Heart Day" in New Hanover County and encourages all citizens to observe and participate in this day of recognition. He issued a proclamation inJune, condemning safety committees and Patriots' actions; and WHEREAS, the Safety Committees ufNew Hanover, Brunswick, B|aden, Dup|in, and Ons|owCounties (the District of Wilmington) met in Wilmington on June JO, 1775, and formed a committee to respond to this proclamation; and WHEREAS, this committee recommended that residents sign a resolution declaring that Governor Martin's proclamation contained "many things asserted to be fact which are entirely without foundation..." And when the District of Wilmington Resolves were published in the newspaper, they included a resolution applauding the "People of New Hanover" for their "Attachment to the Cause of Liberty"; and WHEREAS, New Hanover County established the New Hanover County America 250 NC Committee on March 18, 2024, to support the commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the United States andNorth Carolina's integral role inthat event; and WHEREAS, local chapters of the Sons of the American Revolution and Daughters of the American Revolution recognize the importance of this historical noonount and the significance it played in the outcome of the American Revolution. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the New Hanover County Board of Commissioners, does recognize June 20, 2025 as a day to observe the District of Wilmington Resolves and commemorate its 250th anniversary, and encourages all citizens torecognize this historical event.
