HomeMy WebLinkAbout05-28-2014 BOER MeetingASSEMBLY The 2014 New Hanover County Board of Equalization and Review met on Wednesday, May 28, 2014 at 1 p.m. in the Lucie F. Harrell Conference Room of the New Hanover County Government Center, 230 Government Center Drive, Wilmington, North Carolina. The purpose of the meeting was to hear appeals by property owners regarding their 2014 tax value assessments. Members present for the session were: John Babb (Chairman), Bob Drach and Rich Murray. Staff members present were: Revaluation Supervisor Scott Saunders, Appraisal Supervisor Jim Paulk, Appraiser Tom Davis,Jim Hardin , Appraisal Administrative Support Technician Joann Davenport and Juanitta Wallace. Chairman John Babb called the meeting to order at 1:00 p.m. AGENDA ITEM # 1: Approval of Minutes There were no minutes available for approval. AGENDA ITEM # 2: Old Business There was no discussion by the Board on this agenda item. AGENDA ITEM # 3: New Business There was no new business to discuss. AGENDA ITEM # 4: Affirmation of the Following Signed and Agreed Values Revaluation Supervisor Scott Saunders presented a list of appellants who, in writing, have agreed to the value recommended by the appraisers and agreed to withdraw their appeals. Motion: Bob Drach MOVED, SECONDED by Rich Murray, to affirm the assessed values of the appeals listed below as withdrawn or agreed upon by appellants. Upon vote, the motion carried 3 to 0. Each appellant was informed that the Board would make decisions following the hearings and they would be notified by mail of the Board’s decision in ten days. Alan E Toll, representative for property owner of 8251 Sidbury Rd., Wilmington, NC; Parcel ID R01300-001-027-000 Bill Sohne property owner of 209 Carolina Beach Rd., Carolina Beach, NC; Parcel ID R09006-005-009-001 In deliberations after hearing the appeals during the 1 PM Session, the Board affirmed the assessed values as follows: Parcel ID Owner Appealed Value Affirmed Value R01300-001-027-000 Hanpen Land Co LLC $1,055,200 $813,500 Motion: John Babb MOVED, SECONDED by Rich Murray to reduce the value to $813,500. Upon vote, the motion carried 3 to 0. R09006-005-009-001 Two Feet Over Head LLC $100,200 $100,200 Motion: Bob Drach MOVED, SECONDED by Rich Murray to uphold the value at $100,200 and to relieve any penalties incurred due to discovery for years 2009 thru 2013. Upon vote, the motion carried 3 to 0. AGENDA ITEM # 6: Affirmation of Recommended Values for Scheduled Hearings for Appellants Who Failed to Appear It was reported that all appellants that were scheduled to appear had their hearings before the Board and that there were no other appellants present. The Board considered the following parcels under this agenda item. R07812-002-006-000 Wolf George Georgiana $87,600 $87,600 Motion: Rich Murray, SECONDED by Bob Drach, to uphold the value at $87,600. Upon vote, the motion carried 3 to 0. AGENDA ITEM # 7: Schedule Future Meetings There was no discussion by the Board on this agenda item. AGENDA ITEM # 8: Adjournment There being no further business to consider, Chairman John Babb recessed the 2014 Board of Equalization and Review at 3:15 p.m. until the next hearing date scheduled for Thursday, June 19, 2014.
