HomeMy WebLinkAboutParks Conservancy Bd Minutes April 2014Assembly: The Parks Conservancy Board held its regular meeting on Tuesday, April 15, 2014 at 5:30 P.M. in conference room 119, 230 Government Center Drive, Wilmington, NC. Present: Theron Marshall, Eric Blaesing, Faye Brock, Oliver Carter, Commissioner Beth Dawson, Melissa Ivey, and Jeremy Wilson. Absent: Tom Conway and John Dismukes. Staff: Tanya Gurganious, Andy Johnson and Janine Powell. Topics: The meeting was called to order by Theron Marshall who asked if there was a motion to approve the minutes of the March meeting. Oliver Carter suggested that the Food Truck Frolic paragraph be separated into another section. Beginning with the sentence “Janine shared” it will become item #4. Website. The following motion was presented: Motion by Eric Blaesing second by Oliver Carter that the minutes of the March meeting be approved with the correction listed above. Upon vote, the motion carried unanimously. Committee Reports a. Policy. Jeremy Wilson shared that the 501(c)(3) has been completed and mailed. It is hoped that the nonprofit status will be completed within the next 90 days. b. Volunteer. Janine Powell shared that she received a volunteer application which someone came to the Parks office and filled out. Volunteers will be needed for Earth Day and the beautification day. Janine will write a personal handwritten note to the volunteers who helped during the Food Truck Frolic. The Cape Fear Garden Club Civic Improvement Committee will send volunteers to assist in planting during the Beautification Day on May 17th. Faye Brock shared that she received positive feedback from the Food Frolic volunteers who are excited about volunteering again. Stated she would like to have an appreciation event for the volunteers in the fall to say thank you. Oliver Carter suggested we develop a database for volunteers. c. Events. Melissa Ivey shared that there was no meeting was held this month. The Food Truck Frolic was a great success. d. Fundraising. On behalf of Tom Conway, Janine reported that the Cape Fear Garden Club Civic Improvement partnership was kicked off during Plant an Azalea Week. Cards are available for purchase at Jesters Java and the Airlie gift shop. At a cost of $15, azaleas can be purchased in honor or memory of someone. The money raised, ($250 thus far), goes into a plant fund. Eric Blaesing added that he has been meeting with the Earth Day people and they have been very successful with percentage nights/third party events at area restaurants. Thought it might be a good idea for the committee to consider doing something like this in the future as well.  Food Truck Frolic. Eric Blaesing shared the Food Truck Frolic went exceptionally well. The total amount received from vendors was $1,300 and $1,500 from sponsors for a total of $2,800. The fall Food Truck Frolic has been scheduled for Saturday, October 26th at Hugh MacRae Park. Every vendor represented at the first frolic will attend as well as Flaming Amy’s. Non-Agenda Items. Andy Johnson shared the April & May events sheet. He also reminded the board to fill out the parks survey Tara sent out if they have not already done so. Commissioner Dawson encouraged the board to share the survey with their family & friends as well. National Public Garden is Friday, May 9th. Airlie Gardens will be free to the public. Janine shared that there was recently a great article in the Star News about the need for a Parks Conservancy Board. Adjournment.
