HomeMy WebLinkAboutPksConservBd Minutes June 21 2016 ASSEMBLY The Parks Conservancy Board held its regular meeting on Tuesday, June 21, 2016 at 5:30pm in conference room 119, 230 Government Center Drive, Wilmington NC. Present: Jeremy Wilson (Chairman), Eric Blaesing, Faye Brock, Janeth Dill, Richard Lawson, Kelsie Obernuefemann and Commissioner Rob Zapple. Absent: Melissa Collins, Beth Crookham, Tori Jones, Anne Murray, and Aileen Sutton. Staff: Tara Duckworth, Tanya Gurganious, Andy Johnson and Janine Powell. WELCOME AND APPROVAL OF MINUTES The meeting was called to order by Jeremy Wilson who asked if there was a motion to approve the minutes of March and April. The following motion was presented: MOTION: Eric Blaesing MOVED; SECONDED by Richard Lawson, that the minutes of the March and April meetings be approved. Upon vote, the MOTION CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY. 1. Treasurer’s Report. The financials were reviewed by Janeth Dill. The income statement reflected two payments made for the skate park. Director’s Report. Tara Duckworth reported that the playground at Hugh MacRae Park is currently under construction. The ribbon cutting will take place the week of July 18th. The splashpad installation will begin as soon as the large playground is open. The Parks & Gardens website has photos of all of our current projects. The notice to proceed for the Ogden Park trail was issued today. Construction will start this week, with the project taking 30-45 days for completion. Waiting on the draft of the Master Plan which she will bring to the Commissioners later this summer. She and Andy met with Planning and are trying to get DOT to prepare a MOA regarding Military Cutoff Extension with the possibility of constructing a multi-purpose trail. They are making some headway. She and Andy have put together a plan regarding park preserves. They also met with Coastal Land Trust to discuss the issue as well. She will propose to County management that we create passive trails. Ogden Skate Park Progress Update. Tara reported that she recently spoke with Grindline and things are going well. She will be doing Change Order for Phase II of the project for which the funds are already in place. Janine received the great news that the bowl will be made larger/deeper using grant funds received from the Tony Hawk Foundation. Janine shared that “Get Rad for Ray” will be held here next year. (This is a skate competition hosted by Tony Hawk with proceeds benefiting the Chordoma Foundation.) Janine also submitted a grant to the Landfall Foundation for a refillable water station. Additionally, she is looking into the possibility of having a donated webcam placed at the skate park. Committee Reports/Discussion of 2016 Plans a. Fundraising & Development. Eric provided a handout showing the Food Truck Rodeo totals. April’s total was $5,554, compared to $1,965.50 from the previous event in November, 2015. The next event will take place October 23rd at Hugh MacRae Park. Election of Officers. Jeremey recommended we elect officers at the August meeting. Those present were in agreement and the following motion was presented: MOTION: Faye Brock MOVED; SECONDED by Richard Lawson that the election of officers be held at the August meeting. Upon vote, the MOTION CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY. Non-Agenda Items. Richard Lawson suggested that the board pursue the possibility of recruiting New Hanover & Hoggard High School students to volunteer. (Adopt-A-Park) The volunteer committee will look into this in the fall when school resumes. Eric Blaesing posed the idea of a possible charity race around the Food Truck Rodeo. Commissioner Zapple suggested that everyone who has not had a chance, to stop by the Northern Regional Park and check it out. ADJOURNMENT MOTION: Jeremy Wilson MOVED; SECONDED by Eric Blaesing, that the meeting be adjourned. Upon vote, the MOTION CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY. The meeting adjourned at 6:29pm.
