HomeMy WebLinkAboutPksConservBd Minutes Jan 2017 ASSEMBLY The Parks Conservancy Board held its regular meeting on Tuesday, January 17, 2017 at 5:30pm in Conference Room 119, 230 Government Center Drive, Wilmington NC. Present, Eric Blaesing, Faye Brock, Janeth Dill, Tori Jones, Cindy Kauth, Anne Murray, Jeremy Wilson and Commissioner Rob Zapple. Absent: Beth Crookham, Richard Lawson, Comer Lyons, Kelsie Obernuefemann and Aileen Sutton. Staff: Tara Duckworth, Tanya Gurganious, Andy Johnson and Janine Powell. WELCOME AND APPROVAL OF MINUTES The meeting was called to order by Eric Blaesing who welcomed those in attendance. He then shared with the board that he was contacted by board member Richard Lawson who informed him he will take a leave of absence due to medical issues. Also, board member Kelsie Obernuefemann has resigned. Eric then asked for a motion to approve the minutes of the November meeting. MOTION: Faye Brock MOVED; SECONDED by Anne Murray, that the minutes of the November 15th meeting be approved. Upon vote, the MOTION CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY. 1. Treasurer’s Report. Janeth reviewed the financials as of December 2016, noting that there was a big increase in income compared to 2015. (In 2015 there was income of $7,000 compared to $123,000 for 2016.) Most of the funds received went to the skate park. The expenses incurred were minor and were for advertising and banners. Director’s Report & Skate Park Update. Tara Duckworth shared that the Master Plan presentation to the County Commissioners will take place Monday, January 23rd. Board members can watch it live on NHC TV. Recently, beautification projects were done at Veterans Park, and they were quite successful. Staff from various areas pitched in to help. Andy Johnson met with representatives at GE who are interested in doing a Work on Wilmington project at Hugh MacRae Park. We anticipate that we will have area realtors providing help within our parks system as well. Currently working on parks preserves and hope to provide a tour of those preserves for the board. The cold weather has delayed the pouring of concrete for the skate park. However, staff are hoping for an early February completion. The official ribbon cutting will take place on Sunday, April 23rd at 2pm during the Food Truck Rodeo. Janine shared information about the Run & Roll for Ray event to be held at Ogden Park on February 18th at 10am. Participants will be sponsored for however many times they go around the one-mile loop at Ogden Park. The Ray Underhill Foundation is handling the event, and we will get a good portion of the proceeds. The following vendors will also be on hand for the event, Dubs Donuts, PT’s Grille and La Bella Airosa. She added that they are working on the date for the Rad for Ray event and information will be forthcoming. Attendance Policy. This discussion was tabled until a later date. Next Food Truck Rodeo Recap. Eric shared that the next Food Truck Rodeo is scheduled for Sunday, April 23rd at Ogden Park. It is expected that this will be a great event as the skate park will be officially open. Selection of Specific Funding Project. At the November meeting, Tara shared a Power Point presentation detailing three possible funding projects for the board to undertake as its next fundraising opportunity. The consensus was that the installation of a Challenge Course at Northern Regional Park should be the focus going forward. Challenge course will be the next fundraising project. After some discussion, it was decided that board members would share ideas for fundraising and approaching prospective donors at the next meeting. Next Meeting Date. The next meeting will take place on Tuesday, February 21st. ADJOURNMENT MOTION: Anne Murray MOVED; SECONDED by Jeremy Wilson, that the meeting be adjourned. Upon vote, the MOTION CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY. The meeting adjourned at 6:25pm.
