The Parks Conservancy Board held its regular meeting on Tuesday, June 20, 2017 at 5:30pm in Conference Room 119, 230 Government Center Drive, Wilmington, NC.
Present: Eric Blaesing (presiding), Faye Brock, Justin Gibson, Anne Murray, Tori Jones, Richard Lawson, Comer Lyons, Jeremy Wilson and Jessica Wilson.
Absent: Janeth Dill, Cindy Kauth, Paul Smith and Commissioner Rob Zapple.
Staff: Tara Duckworth, Tanya Gurganious, Andy Johnson, Janine Powell and Jodi Rich.
WELCOME AND APPROVAL OF MINUTES
The meeting was called to order by Eric Blaesing who welcomed those in attendance. He then asked for a motion to approve the minutes of the May meeting.
MOTION: Jeremy Wilson MOVED; SECONDED by Richard Lawson, that the minutes of the May 16th meeting be approved. Upon vote, the MOTION CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY.
1. Treasurer’s Report. In Janeth’s absence, Janine Powell shared that there was a deposit made in the amount of $500 which was from the Ray Underhill Foundation. Additionally, a board
gift was received along with a check from the previous Food Truck Rodeo.
Director’s Report. Tara Duckworth shared that staff is embarking on a parks preserve program. With the recent passing of the County budget, County management agreed to provide funds
for the purchase of land off Middle Sound Loop Road. Janine has also applied for a grant which is looking promising. A new sign was recently put up at Smith Creek Park detailing the
parks preserve at that location. Additionally, as part of the parks preserve endeavor, staff hopes to plant edible trees as a feature of the preserve.
Food Truck Rodeo. Eric Blaesing shared the there was a somewhat slow but steady crowd at the Food Truck Rodeo held on Father’s Day. The fall Food Truck Rodeo will take place on Sunday,
October 29th at Hugh MacRae Park.
Adopt a Highway/Trash Mob Update. Jodi Rich shared that a two-mile stretch of Harris Road near Smith Creek Park has been adopted. Trash mobs will be held the 2nd Saturday of January,
March, June and September from 9-11am. Signs have been placed on Harris Road by the DOT which say Adopt a Highway; Parks Conservancy New Hanover County. A video was also shown of Mr.
Johnson, a resident of Harris Road who has been trying to keep the area cleaned for 45 years. Mr. Johnson expressed his happiness and thankfulness that New Hanover County Parks Conservancy
will be conducting periodic cleanups of the area now that it has been officially adopted.
T-Shirt Information/Discussion. Jodi Rich passed around several t-shirts to get the board’s input on which one they thought they would like to wear. After some discussion, it was decided
that Justin Gibson would head the project and work with Jodi to decide which t-shirt to order and how many.
Roundtable Discussion
a. Name for Challenge Course. After some discussion, it was decided that the name for the challenge course would be “Coastal Challenge Course”. The amount needed to build the course
is $165,000.
b. Ideas on Specific Projects Aligned with this Program. There was some discussion regarding possible fundraisers for the challenge course. Tory shared that she did speak with someone
from Gold’s Gym. Others added that it would be nice to do some sort of fitness challenge with proceeds going to the challenge course.
Next Meeting Date. The next meeting will take place on Tuesday, July 18th.

MOTION: Jeremy Wilson MOVED; SECONDED by Anne Murray, that the meeting be adjourned. Upon vote, the MOTION CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY.
The meeting adjourned at 6:21pm.
