The Parks Conservancy Board held its regular meeting on Tuesday, June 19th, 2018 at 5:30pm in Conference Room 119, 230 Government Center Drive, Wilmington, NC. (There was no quorum.)
Present: Eric Blaesing (presiding), Justin Gibson, Comer Lyons, Anne Murray, Paul Smith and Jessica Wilson.
Excused: Janeth Dill and Tori Jones.
Absent: Faye Brock, Cindy Kauth and Commissioner Rob Zapple.
Staff: Tanya Gurganious, Andy Johnson, Janine Powell and Jodi Rich.
The following is a synopsis of what was discussed.
$17,000 was received from the Duke Energy Water Resources Fund which will go towards the kayak launch at Pages Greek. Jodi & Janine went to accept the check along with a sculpture.
They shared that there were groups present who had been recipients for several years. We can make the ask again and hopefully for more money.
Tara shared that the County partnered with the City of Wilmington for the purchase of a portion of Echo Farms. The Middle Sound Loop Trail is complete. Staff has been busy working on
various Arboretum projects.
The Pages Creek Kayak Launch is under construction. Once it has been completed, the board will go on a field trip to the site.
We have several new board members who will start in July. Justin Gibson, Tori Jones and Paul Smith have all been reappointed. The new board members are: Stephen Burdt, Mark Callori,
Jessica Gray, Cheryl Hannah and Robert McFeeters.
Eric shared a list of vendors who have sent in their checks for the Food Truck Rodeo. Janine shared information on what Raleigh does for their food truck events. (They ask for a flat
fee of $325 up front; rain or shine.) We hope to do something similar with ours, just at a lower rate, possibly $250. Raleigh also has a selection process so they do not have to have
multiple vendors selling the same/similar items. to share thoughts and where we think we are going. Shared a list of people who have made donations. Janine shared what Raleigh does.
Hope to do something similar with ours.
Shared handout of ideas from Tori Jones re: Coastal Challenge. Eric asked those present to take the information with them and be ready to discuss at the July meeting.
Those present also discussed meeting frequency and if we should meet every other month. The consensus was that we definitely need to have a July meeting for the benefit of the new members.
Will discuss further at the July meeting.
Eric shared that he felt we should have projects for everyone that they personally oversee. Feels it would help to invest people in the board. Tara shared that she will give a presentation
for the benefit of the new board members at the July meeting detailing the various projects that we do.
A trash mob will take place tomorrow at 10:00am.
