The Parks Conservancy Board held its regular meeting on Tuesday, September 15, 2020 at 5:30pm via Microsoft Teams.
Present: Jessica Gray (presiding), Alyson Fleming, Mark Ihnat, Amy McGlinn, Jim Orr, Tony Pagrabs, Spero Pekatos and Philip White
Absent: Commissioner Jonathan Barfield, Michelle Fogle, Cheryl Hannah, and Lynn Kozik.
Staff: Tara Duckworth, Tanya Gurganious, Andy Johnson, Janine Powell and Jodi Rich.
WELCOME AND APPROVAL OF MINUTES
The meeting was called to order by Jessica who welcomed those in attendance. She then asked new board members, Tony Pagrabs and Philip White to introduce themselves. She then asked
for a motion to approve the minutes of the February meeting.
MOTION: Jim Orr, MOVED; SECONDED by Mark Ihnat, that the minutes of the February 18th meeting be approved. Upon vote, the MOTION CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY.
1. Treasurer’s Report. Spero provided an update of the financials as of August 31st. We received a $100 donation, $105 Plant an Azalea Donation and $1,000 Grant from Walmart. Our ending
balance was $56,805.
2. Director’s Report. Tara reported most of the parks are currently open. The FEMA assessments have been completed and we are working with FEMA contractors to get things cleaned up.
3. Development Committee – Pickle Ball Presentation. Mark Ihnat updated the board on a fundraising proposal received from the Cape Fear Pickle Ball Club. They would like to start a
fundraising campaign and would like the Parks Conservancy board to be a part of it. The campaign is primarily for the conversion of the tennis courts are Arrowhead Park to pickle ball
courts. Mark asked the board for their feedback. After some discussion, it was felt that there should be more buy-in from the club. Given the current fundraising climate, we recommend
that they first turn to the 1,500 (their estimate) pickleball players in NHC to solicit donations. If they have 1,500 players, this would be a donation of $34 per player and could help
them raise a substantial amount of money which could possibly help them get additional donations. (If they desire, a donation page can be set up via our website.) After some discussion,
the following motion was presented:
Motion: Jim Orr MOVED; SECONDED by Philip That the board ask the pickle ball club to consider first raising funds within their organization. Upon vote, the MOTION CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY.
4. Food Truck Rodeo. The committee and staff discussed options for the November 1st event and the consensus was to cancel as most other cities have canceled their food truck events.
Hopefully we will be able to have the event in the spring.
5. Other Business/New Business. None to report.
6. Next Meeting Date. The next regularly scheduled meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 20th.
ADJOURNMENT
MOTION: Spero Pekatos MOVED; SECONDED by, Tony Pagrabs that the meeting be adjourned. Upon vote, the MOTION CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY.
The meeting adjourned at 6:19pm.
Respectfully submitted,
Tanya Gurganious
Administrative Coordinator
