HomeMy WebLinkAboutCITY OF ILM NHCCFW JULY 23 2025 Meeting Minutes CITY OF WILMINGTON/NEW HANOVER COUNTY COMMISSION FOR WOMEN A Joint City-County Commission NHC Government Building – Rm. 155 July 23, 2025 - 4:00 PM Meeting Minutes In Attendance: Sheila Evans, Lindy Ford, Emily Mitchell, Tracey Newkirk, Hayley Jensen, Debbie, Todd, Olivia Thames, Velva Jenkins. Quorum established. Absent: Beth Ann Bryant Richards, Jen Peterken, Jen Wilson-Mathis Staff Attendance – Mary Vigue, City of Wilmington, Linda Thompson, New Hanover County The meeting was called to order by Sheila Evans at 4:02 p.m. Agenda Approved – motion by Sheila, seconded by Debbie Todd. Motion adopted. June 2025 Minutes -motion by Sheila, seconded by Olivia Thames. Motion adopted. Admin Change – Sheila Evans informed the commission that Tomeka Jarreau, our county administrator, has been redeployed to another department. Linda Thompson will handle all business needs of the commission. Officer Elections, Chair, Vice-Chair, and Secretary for 2025 - 2026 – Linda Thompson handled the nominations and the voting which was required to be handled in person. Chair – Olivia Thames Vice-Chair- Hayley Jensen, Secretary – Sheila Evans Old Business: Venues/Events/Lists to Share Pulse Survey – Olivia shared she did receive some updates from a member and we discussed to keep looking for opportunities to share. WILMA Accelerator Event – Debbie was gathering the NHCCFW items to have at the table. Women’s History Month Luncheon Update – Sheila shared that she forwarded emails to Mary Vigue with the confirmation/reservation for a room for the luncheon March 6, 2026 at the Skyline Bldg downtown. Mary will be able to confirm the room capacity – we should reach out in the fall. Establishing a WHM Luncheon committee, including: Hayley Jensen, Emily Mitchell, Lindy Ford, Valva Jenkins, and Mary Vigue, stated she would be able to assist as we are using a city property. Linda Thompson shared that NHC has decorations that could be used for the event. Linday recommended Premier Catering. Olivia thanked Sheila for serving as chair for four years. She remarked that there was always consistency with Sheila. Olivia shared index cards and asked each member to write 3 personal strengths on one side and Why you want to serve on the NHC Commission for Women. A few members shared their strengths and whys with the group. Olivia shared that she would like to see us stretch further into our strengths and bring them into the community. Further, she suggested that maybe we could go to Girl Scout locations and maybe have lunch. The thought is to go into others' territory. Linda shared that her office went from 5 team members to she and Travis Corpening due to budget cuts. They are working together to ‘figure it out’ as they are responsible for three commissions. Linda also reminded us of the new name of her office, the Office of Civic Engagement. She also stated that she would like to give our members a formal presentation of her office at one of our meetings. Lindy requested that Linda be on our next meeting agenda for the presentation. Tracey Newkirk stated that she was happy that the NHC Commissioners kept all the commissions. Announcements: Linda updated the group that about 85 people attended the Food summit that her office held –Lindy and Emily Mitchell attended. rd Tracey shared that the Taste to Truck event at the Schwartz Center on August 23 from 4 – 8 pm. $25 donation. This is a family th event including a Kids Zone. This is the 5 anniversary. There will be a tent. It is preferred that tickets be purchased online. Velva Jenkins shared that the YWCA is having a 2-Day Boot Camp for girls 8 – 18 yrs at GLOW. They have 73 registrations. There is a comprehensive curriculum that includes healthy hair, DIY fashion, and safety workshops. They will receive a GLAM bag and T- shirts. Velva thanked those in the room who agreed to volunteer.
