Board Members Assael, Shaun PRESENT Carbone, Liz EXCUSED Clinton, Ann EXCUSED Colin, Emily PRESENT Dodd, Scott PRESENT Haragan, Ellen PRESENT Kozik, Lynn PRESENT Lawler, Patricia PRESENT Niggl, Paul PRESENT Salter, Tiffany PRESENT Sheridan, Earl PRESENT Smith, Harriet PRESENT Staff Members & Board Reps. Conners, Dana PRESENT Mays, Yvette PRESENT Zimmer, Ronna (Foundation Rep) EXCUSED Petcovic, Monica (Friends Rep) PRESENT Lisa Wurtzbacher EXCUSED Welcome Patricia Lawler convened the meeting at 1:30 pm. Agenda Review Approved Approval of Previous Minutes The minutes from the last board meetings on August 21st & September 19th, were sent to the board prior to the meeting for review. Motion: Earl Sheridan MOVED, SECONDED by Shaun Assael, to accept the minutes of the 8/21/25 & 9/19/25 as written. Upon voting, the MOTION WAS CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY. NHC Friends of the Public Library • The board will meet next Tuesday. Minutes 10 09 2025 LAB Director’s Report • The Ribbon Cutting for the new main library was held on October 6 at 2:00 p.m. • Dana will share the YouTube link and photos from that day to the board. • We do have door counters at the front doors and on the doors to the Local History room. • We will be closed on Monday, Oct. 13th for Staff Development Day. The Museum staff will be joining us that morning for mandatory NHC training. • Next week, several staff members will be attending the NCLA (NC Library Assoc.) Conference in Winston Salem. • Staff are working on the opening day collection for the Northchase library. Our major book vendor, Baker & Taylor, just folded and we are looking for a new supplier. We need a vendor who provides book processing and catalog records. We use the Dewey decimal system. • Our book budget enhancement request for Northchase was 1 million dollars. Of that, the library was awarded 680,000 in their budget. We will supplement our needs with book sale funds. • In mid-November, all departments will receive budget request instructions from NHC. Late January, the budget requests will be submitted by each department. After reviews with the county’s leadership teams, the budget is presented to the County Commissioners. Emily Colin reported on the Cape Fear Book Festival • Will be held on Saturday, Nov. 15th & Sunday, Nov. 16th at the Main Library. • 50 authors have signed up. • Day 1: Various workshops for local aspiring writers. • Day 2: A local author book sale. Authors from Pender, Brunswick, and New Hanover counties will host book sale and signing tables in the lobby and multipurpose room. New Business Nominations for Slate of Officers Tiffany Salter presented the following nomination for Slate of Officers: Chair – Patricia Lawler, Vice Chair – Lynn Kozik and Secretary – Shaun Assael No other nominations were presented. Motion: Tiffany Salter MOVED, SECONDED by Emily Colin, to accept the nominations presented. Upon voting, the MOTION WAS CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY. Policy Revision – Library Meeting Room Policy • Dana Conners presented the updated Library Meeting Room Policy for review. This was submitted to the board prior to the meeting today. • Updates reflect consistency in all other library policies and the county’s policy on meeting spaces. • Each revision was reviewed and discussed. Minutes 10 09 2025 LAB • The following changes were requested o Add the word ROOM to the title: New Hanover County Public Library Meeting ROOM Policy o Section C, 1st bullet, last sentence. Change “is not allowed” to “are not allowed”. Motion: Earl Sheridan MOVED, SECONDED by Ellen Haragan, to accept the Library Meeting Room Policy with the 2 changes presented. Upon voting, the MOTION WAS CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY. Adjournment Motion: Paul Niggl MOVED, SECONDED by Emily Colin to adjourn the meeting. The board adjourned the meeting at 2:15 p.m. Board members took a tour with the Director of the new Main Library.
