HomeMy WebLinkAbout2025-08-26 NHCHLC Minutes NEW HANOVER COUNTY HISPANIC/LATINO COMMISSION MINUTES Location: Government Center, Room 136 August 26, 2025 – 5:00pm Members present: Natalie Picazo , Dr. Amanda Boomershine, Maria Carmen Rodriguez Morales, Dr. Whiyie Sang, Rafael Toro, Dr. Edelmira Segovia, Janeth Howard and Lambeth Chalk Members absent: Joseph Casares, Dr. Andres Afanador, Dr. Edelmira Segovia, and Gustavo Rodea I) Call to Order and Agenda- Meeting called to order at 5:05pm motioned by Maria, seconded by Amanda II) Approve Minutes and Agenda motioned by Maria, seconded by Amanda III) Chair Comments- Joe left no comments IV) Old Business a. NHC H/L Commission Meeting structure  Natalie, Joe, and Linda met with the county clerk and attorney to draw up the guidelines that were passed out at the meeting. See handout for details.  These new guidelines we may want to rethink the subcommittees we drafted b. NHC H/L Resource List Update  The county now has a web portal “Community Resource Portal.” Linda is asking if this can be put in Spanish as well  If we approve this portal, Linda will have it added to our page V) New Business a. Cape Fear Latinos Festival Participation- all present voted yes to participate. Rafael will be in charge of table set up. Linda will order tablecloth if there is time or provide a county tablecloth (also ordering the missing name tags and flags). b. Hispanic Heritage Month Proclamation- all present voted yes to providing a proclamation (we can use the existing one and change the date or write a new one). Information will be sent out to see who would like to read it on Sept 15 at 9am. c. Annual Report- we do not have to have one if there is not enough content. A group can be formed to discuss this ad hoc if necessary. Due early spring. VI) Upcoming Events a. Faith ID Sept. 21 9am b. Latino Alliance meeting Sept. 23 noon c. MED Week coming up (more details to come from Linda) Latino Alliance hosting NC Justice Center for POA Clinic Oct. 18. Volunteers needed, especially bilingual notaries VII) Public Comments a. The question was raised about ways and spaces for the Hispanic Latino Community to be correctly informed about ICE and their rights to reduce misinformation.  Discussed adding a statement of inclusivity to the handout we have about the HL Commission so that the HL community feels safe joining our meetings  Siembra’s card and the red card were mentioned  We should add Futuro to the list of resources we made VIII) Adjourn- Meeting adjourned 6:05 motioned by Maria, seconded by Lambeth NEXT MEETING – September 23, 2025 5:00pm
