2010-12-15 New Hanover County Advisory Council For North Carolina Cooperative Extension Wednesday, December 15, 2010 MINUTES A meeting of the New Hanover County Advisory Council for the North Carolina Cooperative Extension was held on December 15, 2010 in the auditorium at the Arboretum, 6206 Oleander Drive, Wilmington, North Carolina. Members Present: Members Absent: David Bridgers Durwood Baggett Karl Busick, (Chair) Sheila Chase Amanda Davis (Secretary) Ted Davis, III. Adrian Early Jewell Hobbs Ann Hilburn Angela Keith Paul Masteen Zachary Rudisin Charles Mincey Khalilah Thrower Andy Mills (Vice Chair) Christopher Yermal Staff Present: Al Hight (County Extension Director) Ken Wells (Consumer Health Agent) Minutes: Chairman Karl Busick called the meeting to order. Each member present stated their name. Motion by Ann Hilburn was made to waive the reading and to accept for the public record the September 22, 2010 Minutes. That Motion was seconded by Charles Mincey. The vote passed (8-0). Rainwater Garden Project: County Extension Director Al Hight and Vice Chair Andy Mills reported on the installation of an additional Cistern is on hold. The pavers are to be installed by 12/31/2010. Decorative features will be added to create a designated garden. Beautification Project: Vice Chair Andy Mills reported on this project on behalf of Project Lead Angela Keith. Multiple locations were given by committee to advisory board for vote. The 3 chosen locations: 1. Veterans Park 2. Ogden Park 3. Hugh MacRae Park Vote passed (8-0) Landscape Design Plans and Proposed Signage to be presented by Angela Keith and Committee and then voted upon at the February 2, 2011 meeting. N. H. Co-Op Extension Education Project: Executive Director Al Hight reported on behalf of Project Lead Durwood Baggett. Al Hight introduced Staff Guest Consumer Health Agent Ken Wells to discuss the integration of Nutrition Education into this project and the new 4H Staff Member. Mr. Wells updated the Advisory Council of the current relationship of the Extension with Ogden Elementary through Mr. Wells, Eaton Elementary through the Master Gardeners, and Bellamy Elementary through the Special Education Teacher. Mr. Wells indicated he intended to Pilot the Education Program through Parsley Elementary in 10-12 programs during the 2011-12 school year. Mr. Wells updated Advisory Council that he was in the process of creating a Junior Master GardenerManual, List of Scheduled Activities, and Enrichment Programs. With the expansion of staff, Committee Lead will function as a liaison. 1 Executive Director Comments included that staff will be interviewing for the 4H position on December 22, 2010. Al shared his vision of The Japanese Garden being 2011. He also structure being donated to the children of the arboretum from a benevolent patron. The Advisory Council expressed their Family. : Chairman Karl Busick lead a discussion on the role of the Advisory Council to be zealous advocates in the community for the Cooperative Extension. The full board was asked to consider the names of other community organizations with which each of them was associated for purposes of scheduling an appearance by the Executive Director to increase community awareness of Cooperative Extension with the purpose of developing enthusiasm and relevance. The goal stated was to schedule one appearance per month in 2011. The list of those potential organizations are as follows with the contact name beside: 1. County Citizens Academy TBA 2.Myrtle Grove Middle School (Ann Hilburn) 3. Community Garden Clubs TBA 4. TBA 5.Cape Fear Academy (Ann Hilburn) 6.Ogden Elementary Parent Teacher Association (PTA) (Ken Wells) 7. (Angela Keith possibly?) UNCW appearances 8.New Hanover County Bee Keepers Association (David Bridgers) 9.Rotary Club (Adrian Early) 10.Kiwanis Club (Amanda Davis) 11.Engineering Clubs (Any Mills) 12.Society of Military Engineers (Charles Mincey) 13.Green Building Association (Paul Masteen) 15-Presentation. The named Advisory Council person is to request 3 possible dates for 2011 to give at the February 2, 2011 meeting. It is preferred that the contact give the date to Al Hight for scheduling in January so that he and that member will report the confirmed date at the February 2, 2011 meeting. The 3 bold font clubs need someone to make contact with them. Chairman Karl Busick reminded the Advisory Council of the following Upcoming Events: nd January 21 and 22 Tree Festival- Independence Mall (JC Penney Wing thth March 5 and 6- Wilmington Garden Show- CFCC Swartz Center March 18, 2010 Arbor Day in North Carolina th March 31 -April 4 Master Gardner Plant Sale-Arboretum. th April 25 projected date Arboretum in the A.M. 6:59p.m. Motion to Adjourn carried (8-0) 7:05p.m. Chairman Karl Busick adjourned the meeting.
