Minutes 05 16 2013 LABLAB Minutes 05 16 2013 Page 1 Library Advisory Board May 16, 2013 Assembly: The Library Advisory Board met in Regular Session on Thursday, April 18, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. in the Board Room of the New Hanover County Public Library, 201 Chestnut Street, Wilmington, NC. Members Present: Gwendolyn Brown, Conrad Luhmann, John Osinski, Elizabeth Stanfield, Members Excused: Kemp Burdette, Nancy Cox, Mary Hatcher (Chair), Carroll Jones, Ellen O’Malley, Members Absent: Deloris Rhodes, Mary Springer, Virginia Teachey, Pat Bell, Paige Owens Library Staff Members: Harry Tuchmayer FOL Rep: Harriett Smith The meeting was called to order by Vice-Chair, Conrad Luhmann at 3:00 p.m. He announced that we do not have a Quorum for today’s meeting. Public Comment and Agenda Review No members of the public were present. Approval of Minutes of Previous Meeting With no Quorum, the minutes will be carried over to the next meeting. FRIENDS’ REPORT Harriett Smith reported that the Friends have no new business to discuss at this meeting. COMMITTEE REPORTS Myrtle Grove Expansion The committee and County Reps met with 3 architectural companies. All presentation were good, but they decided to move forward with John Sawyer. Mr. Tuchmayer did speak with Bill Gage who gave us permission for John Sawyer to use any of his visionary ideas on the project. OLD BUSINESS Library Budget Update Harry Tuchmayer reported that on Monday, May 20th, the County Manager will be presenting the budget to the County Commissioners. If accepted, the Library will receive their first increase in staff in years. We have asked for 2 new ½ time Library Assistance to work on the “Every LAB Minutes 05 16 2013 Page 2 Child Ready to Read” project. This program is designed to get children age 0-5 ready for school and meets the County’s Strategic Plan goals. We’ve had to look at the hours of our part-time staff. The retirement system will no longer consider part-time workers exempt if they work more than 1,000 hours. Due to part-time coverage needs on the weekends, we will be converting 3 part-time positions to permanent temporary with benefits positions.
