Minutes 08 15 2013 LABLAB Minutes 08 15 2013 Page 1 Library Advisory Board August 15, 2013 Assembly: The Library Advisory Board met in Regular Session on Thursday, August 15, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. in the Board Room of the New Hanover County Public Library, 201 Chestnut Street, Wilmington, NC. Members Present: Gwendolyn Brown, Kemp Burdette, Nancy Cox, Mary Hatcher (Chair), Conrad Luhmann, Ellen O’Malley, Deloris Rhodes, Elizabeth Stanfield, Virginia Teachey Members Excused: John Osinski Members Absent: Carroll Jones, Mary Springer Library Staff Members: Harry Tuchmayer, Paige Owens FOL Rep: Harriett Smith The meeting was called to order by Chair, Mary Hatcher at 2:05 p.m. Public Comment and Agenda Review No members of the public were present. Chair, Mary Hatcher asked if any members of the board would like to remove or add any item(s) from the Agenda. Being no changes, the board accepted the Agenda. Approval of Minutes of Previous Meeting The Board approved the minutes from the 6/20/13 meeting as written. CORRESPONDENCE Harry Tuchmayer reported that the Greater Wilmington Business Journal ran an article in July titled, “Adapting to Unemployment Changes”. The article featured the Computer Job Lab that is held at the Main Library. The article was submitted for review by the board. FRIENDS’ REPORT Harriett Smith reported the following:  The Friends are finalizing plans for their annual meeting.  Mini-grant applications are coming in.  September is National Library Card month. The Friends will hold a contest themed "What has your library card enable you to do?"  The Beach Reads book sale on July 20th raised over $3,300 LAB Minutes 08 15 2013 Page 2 DIRECTORS REPORT Harry Tuchmayer distributed the Director’s report to the board prior to the meeting. In addition to the items covered in the report, Harry reported on the following:  In addition to the new staffing positions listed in the report, the library has 2 employees who will be retiring this year. We are fortunate to have some qualified internal candidates for these positions.  Our Summer Reading programs, “Dig into Reading”, were very successful. We received 100% positive comments from parents. Due to the overwhelming responses, we will continue to provide similar activities throughout the year.  Due to the changes in the Smart Start program, the Library will begin our own program to work with community children groups like daycares to provide literacy education to approx. 800 local children  The Library Foundation will hold their Food For Thought event on November 3rd. The event is still in the planning stages but the board is asked to save the date. COMMITTEE REPORTS Myrtle Grove Expansion Harry Tuchmayer reported that branch has recently undergone much needed repairs. The carpet has been replaced and a new Circulation desk and staff workstations have been installed. New shelving and additional work chairs will be coming soon. Paige Owens and Harry Tuchmayer met with the architect, John Sawyer, to work on a space needs study. A survey was sent to the staff for their suggestions, needs and ideas. On August 28th the committee will meet to compile the data received. Jennifer Rigby (County Planning Dept.) and Leslie Channing (County IT Director) will be joining the committee. Their expertise will be a valuable addition to the group. Grounds Enhancement – Carolina Courtyard Park Paige Owens reported that the committee had a preliminary meeting with B&O Design. We discussed the original plans and how we would like to change the plans to fit the new concept. The park area was originally a gas station. Research has determined that the tanks were removed. We have completed Phase I of the Brownfield study and the City has recommended us for Phase II. If contaminates are found, we would be provided funding for the cleanup. In December, B&O will meet with the committee to present their site plans. OLD BUSINESS None at this time. LAB Minutes 08 15 2013 Page 3 NEW BUSINESS Key Performance Indicators Report Mr. Tuchmayer distributed his Key Performance Indicators report to the board. This document outlines the Library’s accomplishments for the fiscal year 2013 and provides statistical data. The document was reviewed and discussed with the board. Nominating Committee Mary Hatcher stated the Board’s elections will be held at the November meeting. She appointed Ellen O’Malley and Elizabeth Stanfield to be the nominating committee. Before adjournment, Harry Tuchmayer presented Mary Hatcher with a plaque to recognize her for her years of service to the Library Advisory Board. Today’s meeting was the end of her term. Mrs. Hatcher has been a member of the LAB for 6 years and her dedication and knowledge she brings to the board will be greatly missed by all.
