2006 4-20Library Advisory Board April 20, 2006 Members Present: Lynn Browning, Liz Bryan, Dean Gattone, John Gangemi, Eleanore Lipscomb-Warren, Conrad Luhmann, Frank Oddo, Jacqueline O’Grady, Roberta Penn, Allison Rankin, Paul Walker Friends of the Library: Shay Pittillo Staff Members: David M. Paynter, Harry Tuchmayer Absent Members: Elizabeth Stanfield-Maddox Meeting began at 2:37 PM. No Public Comment Minutes approved as written. Correspondence: Thank you letter from New Orleans Public Library for donation after Hurricane Katrina. John Gangemi received e-mail from Linda Mays complimenting the library reserve system. John Gangemi reported on an article from the California Libraries on customer service, and forwarded this to Harry Tuchmayer, who is on the New Hanover County Committee for Customer Service. Dean Gattone mentioned the need to publicize the parking deck for library visitors. Director’s Report: David reported that the phone system has been corrected to make 911 calls. David reported the Gates Grant has b?een submitted to replace the public computers at several locations. The Local History Room has been featured in the March issue “North Carolina”. Health issues have affected the Reference department and caused shortages in staffing. Margaret is representing the state of North Carolina for children’s librarians in Princeton, NJ this week. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program served 400 people at the Main Library from February to April 17. David Paynter reported that Mary Boone, State Librarian visited the New Hanover County Public Library in April to discuss statewide goals, policies, and grant procedures. Friends’ Report: Shay Pittillo reported that the Book Sale begins April 22, for new members, and for the public will be from April 23-26. June 9 will be the FOL volunteer luncheon at the downtown library. The next FOL meeting will be May 9 at the Main library. Committee Reports: Centennial Committee: 350 tickets have been sold for the Christopher Paul Curtis, children’s author, on May 18. Other arrangements are being made for the fall events also. Part IV of the Library History has been distributed. Another series of media spots has been produced. There are several potential speakers for the fall New York Times speaker event. Policy Advisory Committee: Dean Gattone reported that there have been staff committees created to update the Library policies. The plan is to have updated policies available at the September meeting for the board to review. Web Page: Frank Oddo reported on the minor changes that can be done to make the library web page more user friendly. These recommended changes will be temporary, as eventually the library web page format will change. We will schedule a computer presentation representing the changes in the May meeting. meeting. Old Business: 2007 Budget: David Paynter has met with County officials regarding the budget, and the Budget department has recommended Sunday hours at all the branches. Commissioner Bill Caster has expressed his support for additional parking for the UNCW Executive Development Center at the Northeast Regional Library. There is a half-acre lot behind the building that can be constructed for a parking lot. The State budget reflects a brighter outlook for libraries. Parks Bond: This bond includes $500,000 for planning for future library projects. New Business: State Aid: Legislature Day is June 7, in Raleigh, and David Paynter has invited the board to attend this meeting and meet with the legislators regarding library funding. Allison Rankin invited the LAB and Friends to volunteer at the high schools in judging senior projects. Dean Gattone will chair the May 19 meeting in the absence of John Gangemi.
