Correspondence: Thank you correspondence received from: Voces Latinas to the Consumer Health Librarian, Alice Sherian Pilot Club to Northeast Regional Branch Manager, Phyllis Smith Bobby Greer to David Paynter, Director Director’s Report: David Paynter introduced the Summer Reading Club artwork sent from the State Library. The Star News will provide advertising for this program. The kickoff event -Action Animals USA was standing room only at Main and Northeast. The library will also be hosting the Great Stories Club (Connecting Libraries, Underserved teens and Books) a book discussion program ?program targeting low-income teens this year. Dale Smith, President of Cape Fear Resource Centers has nominated Alice Sheridan, Consumer Health Librarian, to be on a City task force to provide Internet service for distressed neighborhoods. David Paynter shared the READ posters, which feature the UNCW Sea Hawk and Commissioners Davis and Pritchett. The Partnership for Children is participating in a books program with the parents of daycare children by offering breakfast and a story hour when children are dropped off. Harry Tuchmayer discussed how the new Pharos system is working at all library locations. Internet access cards for $2 are required for non New Hanover County residents. The system requires that all outstanding fines be paid in order to use the Internet. We are looking at capability to download recorded books onto M3P players from a workstation at each location. David shared an article about the new library in Kankakee, which revitalized a community. E-mails regarding overdue notices are in the works, but have not been implemented at this time. Some patrons are using Elf to check for overdue materials. We are looking at a service for Reader’s Advisory that will provide a website for individuals interested in this service. David Paynter met with the new Town Manager of Carolina Beach and there seems to be no indication of a new library in the near future. Friends’ Report: Shay Pittillo reported on the book sale in April and the total income from the sale was $28,585. Dennis Fuller, book sale chair, has resigned and those duties have fallen to Marge Gordon and Jewell Dean. The Volunteer Luncheon was held at the Main library on June 9, complete with an African drum and dance show. After the lunch Jock Brandis spoke about his invention of a peanut sheller and the impact it is having on communities in third world countries. The Friends hosted a reception for Christopher Paul Curtis in May. Committee Reports: Centennial Committee: Elizabeth Stanfield-Maddox reported on the success of the library’s centennial events. She distributed folders for the board members to fill with the series of library histories. Beverly Tetterton, local history librarian, has written all of the history and Paige Owens, reference librarian, formatted the information for distribution. The next event will be Deloris Jordan at the Wilmington City Ballroom in September. Harry Tuchmayer reported on the T-shirts and golf shirts that will be available soon. The bags have sold out and are on backorder. We have sold 288 bags so far, and for the summer, there will be a special bag for purchase. Policy Committee: Dean Gattone reported on the library policies discussed today. Additional information will be available at the August meeting. Old Business: Budget: David reviewed the budget with the board members. The budget has received an increase in the part-time account but less than what was requested. The State has recommended a raise of $1 for minimum wage and that will be worked into the part time budget. The County is recommending funding for additional parking at the Northeast branch. Lighting will be required. The budget will be adopted at the next meeting. Library Day: David Paynter reported on the success of the visit to meet with the representatives. Bond Referendum: The bond referendum was approved; however, it has been challenged by a citizen and put on hold until a court makes a decision regarding a technicality. Library Website: Harry Tuchmayer reported that there will soon be a new web page address and the template will be updated in the future. The last library survey revealed that over 30% of visitors to the library use the web page. New Business: Cape Fear Camera Club: David Paynter reported that he is working with the Cape Fear Camera Club to display quarterly exhibits on the third floor of the library. Receptions may accommodate the displays. August Meeting: This meeting has been rescheduled for August 10. Centennial Art Work: Shay Pittillo of the Friends is looking at designs to replace the banners in the center of the library between the first and second floors. John suggested a library display for the Marketplace Mall, similar to the museum displays and David Paynter will check on this. Meeting adjourned at 3:46 PM.
