Minutes 04 17 2014 LABMinutes 04 17 2014 LAB Page 1 Library Advisory Board April 17, 2014 Assembly: The Library Advisory Board met in Regular Session on Thursday, April 17, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. in the Board Room of the New Hanover County Public Library, 201 Chestnut Street, Wilmington, NC. Members Present: Denise Chadurjian, Ellen O’Malley, Harriet Smith, Elizabeth Stanfield, Emilie Swearingen, Virginia Teachey Members Excused: John Osinski, Deloris Rhodes Members Absent: Gwendolyn Brown, Kemp Burdette, Bradford Walker Library Staff Members: Harry Tuchmayer, Paige Owens FOL Rep: Foundation Rep: Ronna Zimmer The meeting was called to order by Chair, Virginia Teachey at 2:05 p.m. Public Comment and Agenda Review No members of the public were present. Chair, Virginia Teachey asked if any members of the board would like to remove or add any item(s) from the Agenda. Emilie Swearingen asked to add Story Walk at Carolina Beach to New Business. Approval of Minutes of Previous Meeting The minutes from the last board meeting on March 20, 2014 were sent to the board prior to the meeting for review. The minutes were approved as written. Motion: Elizabeth Stanfield MOVED, SECONDED by Emilie Swearingen, to approve the March 20, 2014 minutes as written. Upon vote, the MOTION WAS CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY. Chairman’s Comments Chair, Virginia Teachey, stated that she had recently visited the Story Place room at the Main Library and that it looks great. She encouraged all members to visit the room. Ronna Zimmer was introduced as the board Representative for the Library Foundation. Minutes 04 17 2014 LAB Page 2 Correspondence Mr. Tuchmayer presented the following correspondence:  3 comment cards that thanked the library for the Job Lab. Not only did they recognize the staff for being helpful and knowledgeable, but one person stated that he was able to get 2 jobs because of this service.  A note thanking NE staff for Tech Tuesday assistance.  A note recognizing wonderful library staff at MG, NE & Main who assisted with NOOK instructions. FRIENDS’ REPORT In the absence for FOL Rep. Patti Bonner, Harriet Smith presented the following report:  The Spring Used Book Sale on April 4-9 was a huge success.  The Friends new website is up and running.  We have many wonderful programs that will be coming up.  The speaker for the Annual Meeting on Nov. 13th will be Willie Cash. DIRECTORS REPORT Harry Tuchmayer distributed the Director’s report to the board prior to the meeting. In addition to the items covered in the report, he reported on the following:  We have received a letter from the State Library regarding the Innovation Grant we applied for. We are one of seven libraries invited to make our presentation for the grant. Mary Ellen Nolan, Health Librarian, will be making the presentation.  The library will be a Summer Reading Club test pilot in the use of an AWE Tablet program designed to test summer reading retention levels.  Paige Owens and her team did a wonderful job with the Spring Book Sale and raised $58,600. Trish Hatcher has taken on the book sale project and will continue to become a vital member of this team. All books are donated by the public. Leftover books are sent to Better World Books where they are sold or recycled. The Library receives a quarterly revenue check for books that are sold.  We are in the process of adding new energy efficient lighting to the Main Library. In addition, we have painted the tray ceiling and wall soffit over the stairwell. Chairs, tables and paperback racks have been moved to create an open floor plan on the 1st floor.  New tables and chairs have been ordered for the Harnett Meeting Room.  We are looking at future technology upgrades for meeting rooms. OLD BUSINESS Legislative Day Reminder Legislative Day in Raleigh will be Tuesday, May 20th. If you are interested in attending, please contact Yvette Mays or Harry Tuchmayer. This is our opportunity to meet with our Legislatures regarding State Aid for Libraries. We will meet at the Government Center and leave at 7:00 AM, returning that evening. Minutes 04 17 2014 LAB Page 3 COMMITTEE REPORTS Nominating Committee Harriet Smith and Elizabeth Stanfield will present their nominations for Vice Chair to the board at the next meeting. NEW BUSINESS Update on Myrtle Grove Virginia Teachey stated that it was very helpful to see and tour the Myrtle Grove site at our last meeting. Paige Owens & Harry Tuchmayer have met with Chris Coudreit, Tim Burgess and Avril Pinder to present their expansion options for Myrtle Grove. Paige Owens shared the PowerPoint presentation they presented to the group. It outlines three expansion options: A) Expand the current site ($3,113,926.) B) Expansion of current site with purchase of adjacent lot building ($3,882,940.) C) Build on an alternate site in the area ($3,375,068) In addition to the Myrtle Grove Branch, the presentation also included future planning for the Carolina Beach branch to become a library with a community center for an estimated $3,100,000. And for future plans for the North Chase site to become a 16,000 sq. ft. library with a park area for an estimated $4,400,000. Update on Carolina Courtyard Paige Owens reported that B&O Design has submitted their proposal for full design services for Phase 1 of the retrofits. This includes improvements to the building and courtyard landscape. The proposal is in process of routing thru the county’s Finance & Legal Depts. Story Walk at Carolina Beach Emilie Swearinger stated that her Island Women’s Group has started a Literacy Committee and is very interested in getting a Story Walk at the Lake Park. The Carolina Beach Public Works and Island Men’s Group have agreed to do the installation. Carolina Beach Town Council’s next meeting is May 15th at 6:30 PM. The Story Walk proposal will be presented at this time. If approved, they would like to ask the Foundation to make a donation along with other groups they have lined up to fund the project. The LAB is in favor of this idea and will support it. Adjournment Due to time restrictions, the New Virtual Branch Services under New Business will be presented at the next meeting.
