Minutes 05 15 2014 LABMinutes 05 15 2014 LAB Page 1 Library Advisory Board May 15, 2014 Assembly: The Library Advisory Board met in Regular Session on Thursday, May 15, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. in the Board Room of the New Hanover County Public Library, 201 Chestnut Street, Wilmington, NC. Members Present: Denise Chadurjian, John Gardner, Deloris Rhodes, Harriet Smith, Elizabeth Stanfield, Emilie Swearingen, Virginia Teachey, Bradford Walker Members Excused: Kemp Burdette, Ellen O’Malley, John Osinski Members Absent: Gwendolyn Brown, Library Staff Members: Harry Tuchmayer, Paige Owens FOL Rep: Patti Bonner Foundation Rep: Ronna Zimmer The meeting was called to order by Chair, Virginia Teachey at 2:00 p.m. New Member John Gardner was welcomed as a new member of the board. Kudos to the Library  Virginia Teachey presented the board with a recent article in the Star News that featured Story Place.  Bradford Walker stated that at the recent NC Reading Assoc. meeting, Children’s Librarian Margaret Miles spoke with the group and did a marvelous job.  Harriet Smith shared a local Pediatrician’s prescription for kids to read. Mr. Tuchmayer explained that the prescription is part of the Library’s Reach Out and Read program. We have two pediatricians in town who are dispensing the RX to encourage kids to read X number of minutes each night. Their waiting rooms have also been designed as literacy friendly spaces. Public Comment and Agenda Review No members of the public were present. Chair, Virginia Teachey asked if any members of the board would like to remove or add any item(s) from the Agenda. Virginia Teachey added Meeting Dates to New Business. Minutes 05 15 2014 LAB Page 2 Approval of Minutes of Previous Meeting The minutes from the last board meeting on April 17, 2014 were sent to the board prior to the meeting for review. The minutes were approved as written. Motion: Elizabeth Stanfield MOVED, SECONDED by Deloris Rhodes, to approve the April 17, 2014 minutes as written. Upon vote, the MOTION WAS CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY. Correspondence Mr. Tuchmayer received an email from the County Manger regarding the Story Place article in the Star News. He stated that Susan Demarco did a wonderful job of staying on the message of the county’s Strategic Plan. FRIENDS’ REPORT FOL Rep. Patti Bonner presented the following report:  The Spring event series are completed  Photos from past events have been added to the Friends website.  Volunteer Party will be this Sunday at 2pm at the Northeast Branch. Everyone is invited to attend.  Beach Reads Books Sale will be July 19th. The Fall Book Sale will be Sept 26-Oct 1  A calendar of Events and Friends Projects was distributed to the board.  In addition to attending Library Day, The Friends have sent a letter to Rep. Paul Ryan regarding the House draft budget.  Bonner distributed an article from The New York Times, titled “Breaking Out of the Library Mold, in Boston and Beyond”. The article featured new technology and maker spaces that NHCPL is already doing on a smaller scale for our patrons. DIRECTORS REPORT Harry Tuchmayer distributed the Director’s report to the board prior to the meeting. In addition to the items covered in the report, he reported on the following:  Summer Reading Club kick off will be June 14th. A Music Fest for kids will be held at the Kure Beach Pavilion. He thanked Emilie Swearingen and Scooter Hayes for all their work on this project.  AWE Tablets are interactive literacy/math based games that are used in Story Place. The same company that created these tablets has created another game that will be used for Summer Reading. Kids will be able to play a game at the beginning and the end of Summer Reading. The results will determine if the kids are retaining their reading levels over the summer. We are one of four libraries participating in the State Library Pilot Project. OLD BUSINESS Story Walk Update At our last meeting Emilie Swearinger stated that her Island Women’s Group has started a Literacy Committee and is very interested in getting a Story Walk at the Lake Park. Since that Minutes 05 15 2014 LAB Page 3 time, they have met with their Town Council and the project was approved. The book “Pond Babies” has been selected. The next Story Walk will be at Hugh McRae park featuring the book, Bug Safari. Legislative Day Reminder Legislative Day in Raleigh will be Tuesday, May 20th. This is our opportunity to meet with our Legislatures regarding State Aid for Libraries. We will meet at the Government Center and leave at 7:00 AM, returning that evening. Carolina Courtyard Update B&O Design has withdrawn from the project. They felt that this project would require the expertise of a larger company. The County will put the project out for bids. COMMITTEE REPORTS Nominating Committee Harriet Smith stated that after she and Elizabeth Stanfield spoke with the board members, they were unable to find anyone who was interested in the position of Vice Chair. However, all members did recommend Elizabeth Stanfield for the position. Motion: Harriet Smith MOVED, SECONDED by Deloris Rhodes, to appoint Elizabeth Stanfield to the position of Vice Chair. Upon vote, the MOTION WAS CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY. Policy Committee Paige Owens submitted an updated Library Conduct Policy to the board. The updated version contains the same information as the one accepted at the 3/20/14 meeting, but is has been recreated in a new format that is easier to read and use as a handout to patrons. Motion: Harriet Smith MOVED, SECONDED by Elizabeth Stanfield, to accept the updated format of the Library Conduct Policy presented as the formal policy. Upon vote, the MOTION WAS CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY. NEW BUSINESS Recommended Budget Harry distributed copies of the Library’s Recommended Budget to the board for review and discussion. It will go before the County Commissioners on Monday, the Public Hearing will be June 2nd, followed by an Adoption on June 16th. Infographics Infographics is a new tool designed to create flyers in an image theme concept. Data collected from the library’s recent online computer survey was presented in an Infographic and distributed to the board. Meeting Dates Minutes 05 15 2014 LAB Page 4 Virginia Teachey announced that the board will not meet again until September. There are no outstanding topics that need to be addressed at meeting until that date.
