REGULAR MEETING DECEMBER 2, 2015
ASSEMBLY
The Parks Advisory Board held its regular meeting on Wednesday, December 2, 2015 at 8:00am in
conference room 119, 230 Government Center Drive, Wilmington NC.
Present:
Frank Amoroso (presiding), Andy Mills, Bruce Shell, Shawn Spencer and Nikki Zeldin.
Absent:
Linda Reece, Rebecca Powell
Staff:
Tara Duckworth, Andy Johnson and Tanya Gurganious.
WELCOME AND APPROVAL OF MINUTES
The meeting was called to order by Frank Amoroso who asked for a motion to approve the minutes of
the November board meeting.
MOTION:
Moved by Andy Mills, seconded by Bruce Shell. Motion carried.
1.Departmental Update.
TaraDuckworth shared that Greenplay, the company hired to conduct the master
plan, is currently doing inventory. She also shared that she will seek the boards input in January. Tara
then showed the skate park Indiegogo video. We hope to raise $110,000; $1,540 was raised within the first
24 hours of the site being launched. Excited to announce that the Trillium grant in the amount of $750,000

was received, with no matching funds needed. Starting to work in the budget, which is due January 5.
The Food Truck Rodeo was successful with another planned in the spring at Ogden Park.
Park Operations Update.
Andy shared that the NRP (Castle Hayne Park) is going well and is moving at a

pretty fast pace. The unsuitable soil issue has been taken care of along the entrance road and parking lot.
The new road/entrance on Castle Hayne Road should be ready for paving next month. Substantial
completion is expected by end of month, weather permitting. Andy will also meet with the disc golf &
SORBA folks to discuss upcoming improvements. Athletic fields will be closed for rest starting December

15. Requests for spring use have already been sent out. There were a few staff changes due to attrition.

Everything going well with school system. A 3 contractor has been added, which seems to be working
well.
3.Non-Agenda Items.
Would it be possible each month to share a video/picture to help promote parks.
Nikki Zeldin was contacted by UNCW ultimate Frisbee team who stated they were not communicated
with regarding field use at the schools. Asked if we could help them out in the spring? Tara said they can
put in a request; however, they cannot be promised anything. Question posed regarding the possibility of
changing the speed limit on Airlie Road to 25 mph.
