Library Foundation Report Foundation Rep. Ronna Zimmer reported the following: The Foundation’s goal is to raise funds to supplement the County Funds to the Library. Our focus is on the following 3 areas of need: o Create a StoryPlace at all locations o Local History interns to provide digitization assistance o Endowed Book Funds The fall fundraiser will be a mailed brochure that will encourage giving by offering incentive levels. The goal is to raise $10,000. Director’s Report Harry Tuchmayer distributed the Director’s monthly reports to the board prior to the meeting. In addition to the items covered in the reports, he reported on the following:  Paige Owens and Trish Hatcher did an amazing job on the Fall Book Sale and raised $57,000.  The entire county has been engaged in learning how to enter and process work plans and performance evaluations in the County’s NeoGov system. It has allowed us to set up a standardized work plan by job title for all staff. We are also able to add specialized goals and tasks per employee.  Saturday, Oct. 25th the Main Library will host their “Haunted Library”. Last year’s event exceeded 1,500 attendees. Scooter Hayes, Children’s Librarian, has been instrumental in organizing the event and working with volunteers to create props. It will be held at the Main Library with the fear factor rising with each floor. Since our attendance was so high last year, we have actually toned down the advertisements for this event, removed the turnstiles at the entrance to allow patrons to enter and exit and created a new traffic flow this year’s attendees.  We are working on expanding the StoryPlace concept to the Myrtle Grove Branch. The children’s room has been rearranged to provide an interactive place for ages 0-3 and 3-6 years old.  We have added Battery Recycling drop boxes at all locations. In just 6 weeks, over 550 lbs. of batteries were collected and kept out of our local waters and landfills. Minutes 10 16 2014 LAB Page 3 Emily Swearinger commented that Ribbon Cutting for the Carolina Beach Lake Park Story Walk was postponed due to rain. The new date will be Wednesday, Oct. 22nd at 9AM. After conversations about the position, board member Gwendolyn Brown agreed to accept this position. Being no other interest from the board, the nomination was accepted. Motion: Elizabeth Stanfield MOVED, SECONDED by Emilie Swearingen, to appoint Gwendolyn Brown to the position of LAB Secretary. Upon vote, the MOTION WAS CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY. Carolina Beach Children’s Services Carolina Beach Librarian, Cathy Wahnefried, spoke to the board about the Carolina Beach location and their needs. This location is owned by the Town of Carolina Beach. There are 2 employees who are working in a very small space. We provide services to approximately 4,200 people per month. With more programs for kids and high attendance levels, we are often forced us to use the Community Building behind the library. It is not the best space for kids and we would love to be able to do more. Harry Tuchmayer commented that each year the Carolina Beach location is added to our Capital Improvements needs list so that it is recognized by the management team. We have also had recent discussions with the Carolina Beach Town Manager about future needs and ideas. Old Business Carolina Courtyard Update Architect interviews have been scheduled for next week. From the LAB, Virginia Teachey, Harriet Smith, John Osinski and Paul Smith will be attending the meetings. Myrtle Grove Update The Management Team is working well with the Library to bring this project to the forefront. We are looking at alternative sites in a one mile radius of the branch. We should have more details to share at our November meeting.
