Minutes 09 17 2015 LABMinutes 09 17 2015 LAB Page 1 Library Advisory Board September 17, 2015 Assembly: The Library Advisory Board met in Regular Session on Thursday, September 17, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. in the Board Room of the New Hanover County Public Library, 201 Chestnut Street, Wilmington, NC. Bonner, Patti (FOL) Present Zimmer, Ronna (LF) EXCUSED Tuchmayer, Harry Present Owens, Paige Present The meeting was called to order by Chair, Virginia Teachey at 2:00 p.m. Introduction of New Board Member Chair, Virginia Teachey, welcomed new board member Jan Brewington to the board. Roundtable introductions were made by all present. Public Comment and Agenda Review Public Comment No members of the public were present. Agenda Chair, Virginia Teachey asked if any members of the board would like to remove or add any item(s) from the Agenda. Harry Tuchmayer asked to add Pleasure Island Branch Update to the Old Business. The change was accepted and the agenda was approved with the addition. Approval of Minutes of Previous Meeting The minutes from the last board meeting on August 20, 2015 were sent to the board prior to the meeting for review. The minutes were approved as written. Motion: Bradford Walker MOVED, SECONDED Harriet Smith, to approve the August 20, 2015 minutes as written. Upon vote, the MOTION WAS CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY. Minutes 09 17 2015 LAB Page 2 Correspondence Harry Tuchmayer said that the library received a thank you card from a patron who praised the Local History department on their assistance with an obituary search. Friends of the Library Report Patti Bonner reported the following:  Preparing for another round of awards to staff in November.  Shared photos from League United event. Over 200 people were in attendance.  Please come out tonight to support us in the Literary Council’s Spelling Bee.  New Book Club bags will be coming soon.  A new slate of officers will be posted next week.  Author Mary Flynn will speak at Northeast on 9/29, 6:30 pm  We are assisting with the Pleasure Island Brach opening event. Library Foundation Report Harry Tuchmayer reported on the following:  Investments are up $531,000  Discussions are being held regarding the merger of the Foundation and Friends boards.  Fundraising events will consist of a Fall Solicitation brochure and a luncheon to be held in early 2016. Director’s Report Harry Tuchmayer distributed the Director’s monthly reports to the board prior to the meeting. In addition to the items covered in the reports, he reported on the following:  The Fall Book Sale will be Sept 25-27, Oct 2-4  Mr. Tuchmayer distributed copies to all board members of an email from Dennis Fuller regarding the Book Sale Publicity. The email and its responses were reviewed and discussed by the board. Committee Reports None at this time New Business LSTA Planning Grant Susan Demarco, Community Outreach Librarian, submitted and discussed the following: New Hanover County Library presents a symposium series: People, Place, and Platform: Libraries in the 21st Century Minutes 09 17 2015 LAB Page 3 Keynote Speaker: Thomas Frey, “Future Libraries and the Four Crossroads of Change” Tuesday October 27, 2015 @ 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM Cape Fear Community College, Humanities & Fine Arts Center 700 N. 3rd Street - Wilmington, NC 28401 Free & Open to the public Clay tablets, papyrus, paper, cloud: how will the stories and information you seek in the future be delivered? New Hanover County Public Library presents visionary author Thomas Frey speaking on “Future Libraries and the Four Crossroads of Change,” in the main theater of CFCC’s new Humanities and Fine Arts Center. The event is on October 27 at 7:00 pm and will be free and open to the public. Get your free tickets at any NHC Library or at http://cfcc.edu/capefearstage/. Thomas Frey is Senior Futurist of the DaVinci Institute, a nonprofit futurist think tank that operates as a working laboratory for the future human experience. He is in demand as a keynote speaker at national and international business, government, education and library conferences. He has addressed the American Library Association, U.S. Department of Energy, Alliance for Information Science and Technology Innovation, GE Global Research, World Ag Expo, World Future Society, Social Security Administration, and Rockwell Automation, among many others. PLACE: Architect James Bradberry James Bradberry’s Pennsylvania architectural firm has designed two resoundingly successful interactive learning centers called Storyville for the Baltimore County Public Libraries in Rosedale and Woodlawn, Maryland. 1. Wednesday November 4, 2015 @ 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM : Library Staff from across NC Main Library (lunch provided) Bradberry will lead the group through a mock charrette, highlighting the important questions to ask when engaging an architectural firm. He will review current trends in library design and interactive learning centers. 2. Thursday Nov. 5, 2015 @ 9:00 AM -12 PM: NHC Library Staff Main Library Mock charrette focusing on Myrtle Grove. 3. Thursday Nov. 5th @ 6:00 -7:00 PM: FOL Annual Meeting/Community Northeast Library PowerPoint on trends in library architecture and children’s interactive learning spaces. Minutes 09 17 2015 LAB Page 4 PLATFORM: Emily Gore, Digital Public Library of America Emily Gore is the Director for Content of the Digital Public Library of America. In this role, Emily provides strategic vision for DPLA content and metadata, coordinates content and collections workflows and oversees the DPLA Hubs program. 1. Monday February 15, 2016: Staff Development day for NHC library staff, time TBA DPLA overview, using DPLA for genealogy, parallels between digital and physical space, possible implications of increasing digitization for staff. 2. Tuesday February 16, 2016 10:00 AM- 2:00 PM: Library Staff from across NC Main Library (lunch provided) Emily will provide an overview of the DPLA. She will lead library staff through a needs assessment to prepare their digital collections for the future, drawing parallels between digital and physical space. 3. Tuesday February 16, 2016 6:00-7:00 PM: FOL/Community Northeast Library DPLA overview and how to use it for genealogy research. Courtyard Name Harry Tuchmayer stated that the new layout of the Carolina Courtyard Park will create an open park and it will no longer be a courtyard park. With the new look and design, he feels that we should take this opportunity to rename the park. He asked the board members to discuss and submit their suggestions to him. Currently, we are promoting the park as the New Hanover County Public Library Story Park. Old Business Pleasure Island Branch Update Harry Tuchmayer distributed copies of the new floor plans for the Pleasure Island branch library. The plans were discussed with the board. Plans are to open the library on Halloween, 10/31/15. Adjournment There being no further business, Chair, Virginia Teachey adjourned the meeting at 3:50 p.m. We will meet again on Thursday, October 15, 2015.
