Minutes 02 19 2015 LABMinutes 02 19 2015 LAB Page 1 Library Advisory Board February 19, 2015 Assembly: The Library Advisory Board met in Regular Session on Thursday, February 19, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. in the Board Room of the New Hanover County Public Library, 201 Chestnut Street, Wilmington, NC. Members Present: Denise Chadurjian, John Gardner, John Osinski, Harriet Smith, Paul Smith, Emilie Swearingen, Virginia Teachey, Bradford Walker Members Excused: Gwendolyn Brown Members Absent: Elizabeth Stanfield Library Staff Members: Harry Tuchmayer, Paige Owens, Margaret Miles FOL Rep: Patti Bonner (Excused) Foundation Rep: Ronna Zimmer (Excused) The meeting was called to order by Chair, Virginia Teachey at 2:00 p.m. Public Comment and Agenda Review No members of the public were present. Chair, Virginia Teachey asked if any members of the board would like to remove or add any item(s) from the Agenda. Being no changes, the Agenda was approved as written. Approval of Minutes of Previous Meeting The minutes from the last board meeting on January 15, 2015 were sent to the board prior to the meeting for review. The minutes were approved as written. Motion: Paul Smith MOVED, SECONDED John Garner, to approve the January 15, 2015 minutes as written. Upon vote, the MOTION WAS CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY. Chairman’s Comments Virginia Teachey welcomed the board. Correspondence Harry Tuchmayer shared a letter he received from the Cameron Art Museum. The library had loaned them 2 of the Hiroshi pottery bowls that were donated to the library by David Paynter’s children when he retired. One of the bowls even made the cover of the Hiroshi book that was also distributed for review. Minutes 02 19 2015 LAB Page 2 Friends of the Library Report Paige Owens reported the following on behalf of Patti Bonner:  Phil Furia’s program Songs of Hollywood @ NE at 2 PM Sunday 2/22  We are helping the Library and Anne Langan sponsor the St Patrick's program about Ireland by History Professor Paul Townend [who spoke for Downton Abbey and DA Revisited] on March 1 @ NE].  We will host the SE Area Friends of NC Public Libraries workshop on Social Media on March 7 at Main Library.  We are sponsoring a table at the Foundation lunch on March 26.  The Spring Round 2 of our mini grants program is launched and staff will be sending us proposals before the end of the month.  The Spring Book Sale will be held on two weekends. o Friday, March 20th 5:30 – 9 pm MEMBERS ONLY o Saturday, March 21st 9 – 5 o Sunday, March 22nd 11 – 5 o Friday, March 27th 9 – 5 o Saturday, March 28th 9 – 5 o Sunday, March 29th 11 – 5 THIS WILL BE DIME DAY. All books one dime each. Library Foundation Report Yvette Mays reported the following on behalf of Ronna Zimmer:  The 1st Annual Foundation Luncheon Fundraiser will be Feb. 26th from 11:30 – 1:00 at the NE branch. Shane Fernando with CFCC will be the speaker for the event. There will be no charge to attend the luncheon but we are asking for a $50 per person donation. Please consider sponsoring a table (8 seats). If you are interested in attending, please contact me or Ronna Zimmer ASAP so that we can finalize our headcount. Director’s Report Harry Tuchmayer distributed the Director’s monthly reports to the board prior to the meeting. In addition to the items covered in the reports, he reported on the following:  On Monday, Feb. 16th the library was closed to the public so that all staff could attend Staff Development Day. This year the event was created and organized by the staff.  The NCPLDA (NC Public Library Director Association) will be held in Wilmington this March. It will be held at the Marriott behind the library and we have offered our entire third floor meeting space for this event. We expect 50 – 70 library directors to attend.  All staff and board members were asked to participate in a survey regarding what you see the library of the future being. In addition we a applying for an LSTA EZ Planning Grant to cover this topic. Mr. Tuchmayer reviewed some of the survey comments that we have received.  Children’s Librarian, Scooter Hayes is in the running to win a visit by author and actor B. J. Novak as well at $5,000 for the library for his videoed rendition of reading “The Book with No Pictures”. He needs votes before Feb. 28th. Minutes 02 19 2015 LAB Page 3 BREAK: The board adjourned for Committee Meetings CALL TO ORDER: The board reconvened Committee Reports Policy Committee Virginia Teachey stated that the library would like to increase the limit for checking out DVDs to 10 instead of 5. They would also like for the overdue fines for DVD to be reduced to 20 cents per day. This will encourage patrons to check out more DVDs and will reduce the overcrowding issues at the library. DVD fines would be reduced to the same as the overdue fines for books. Motion: Harriet Smith MOVED, SECONDED John Garner, to approve the limit for checking out DVDs to 10 instead of 5 and the overdue fines for DVDs will be reduced to 20 cents per day. Upon vote, the MOTION WAS CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY. Carolina Courtyard Committee John Garner stated that the proposal for the Carolina Courtyard has been reviewed. The new proposal is for a scaled back version of the enhancement of the park that would create a visual park with an area designated for library events. Motion: Harriet Smith MOVED, SECONDED Emilie Swearingen, to accept the Courtyard proposal as written. Upon vote, the MOTION WAS CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY. Intellectual Freedom Committee Bradford Walker stated that the library has received a request from a patron to reconsider the book “Bird and Squirrel on the Run” by James Burks due to its frightening photos and poor ending. After reviewing the book, the committee feels that the books should be retained in the collection in the age group that it is assigned for. Motion: Bradford Walker MOVED, SECONDED John Osinski, to keep the book “Bird and Squirrel on the Run” by James Burks in the collection in the age group that it is assigned for. Upon vote, the MOTION WAS CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY. Staff Reports Reading & Kids Margaret Miles talked about readers advisory services to children and showed the board how to use the library’s website to find reading suggestions through Novelist. We have recently launched a Digital Access Library Card that was distributed to Ashley High School students. This new card allows the students to access our online resources. This is a pilot project that we hope to provide to all NHC students in the future.
