In addition to the report, Mr. Tuchmayer highlighted the following topics: The Library has begun vendor meetings for the RFP (Request for Proposal) for the new ILS program. The Northeast branch is in the process of re-shifting the Fiction section to create a better flow. The request to the Board of the Commissioners that the Large Assembly room at Northeast be renamed the David M. Paynter Assembly room has been passed. Mr. Paynter was very excited to hear that this room would be renamed in his honor. We are in the process of having the room painted and new carpeting installed. Beverly Tetterton and Joe Sheppard have been assisting WECT’s new weekend weatherman Colin Hackman with a series of local history spots for television. Every Wednesday at 5:30 PM and the again at 10:00 PM on Fox, a segment will be aired. This week, the library told listeners how the Cape Fear River got its name. name. Next week Beverly will talk about Castle Hayne and Snow’s Cut won’t be far behind. Parks Superintendent Scott Barnard and his staff assisted the Library in redesigning the arrangement of the park benches outside the Main Library. For years, patrons have complained about the large number of individuals gathered near the entrance, making it difficult for the elderly and parents with small children to enter the building. The heavy stone benches, made out of 19th century City Street curbs have been repositioned throughout the park, offering the same amount of seating as previously available. After a recent meeting with the Finance dept. we have determined that the Libraries will be able to begin accepting credit card payments soon. The Director’s complete monthly report will be attached to the minutes. FRIEND’S REPORT: Friend’s President, Janice Milligan, has resigned from the Board due to personal reasons. Rita Lewis, vice-president and current chair of the book sale committee , will become President of the Friends. Due to the changeover, the Friends did not meet this month. NEW BUSINESS: Planning Grant The State no longer funds grants for traditional Strategic Planning. Planning grants must be used for a more direct service to the public. The staff is looking into the possibility of applying for one of these new service planning grants to highlight and make more accessible some of the new features available in a new ILS. Branch Planning In the event that a large scale economic stimulus is passed, Harry Tuchmayer has identified the Myrtle Grove replacement facility as a Shovel Ready Project to the State. The new branch would need to be at least 23,000 sq. feet. Advocacy The State has a new Secretary of Cultural Resources. The Board needs to be proactive in working closely with her and discussing the needs of the NHC Library system and services we can provide to the public.
