REGULAR MEETING DECEMBER 6, 2017
ASSEMBLY
The Parks Advisory Board held its regular meeting on Wednesday, December 6, 2017 at 8:00am
in Conference Room 119, 230 Government Center Drive, Wilmington NC.
Present:
Bruce Shell, Colin Hackman, Rebecca Powell, Linda Reece, Shawn
Spencer and Nikki Zeldin.
Staff:
Tara Duckworth, Tanya Gurganious and Andy Johnson.

Steve Morrisey, Cape Fear Pickle Ball Club.
WELCOME AND APPROVAL OF MINUTES
The meeting was called to order by Bruce Shell who welcomed everyone and asked if there were any
corrections to the minute. There were none noted and the following motion was presented:

Director/Park Operations Report.
1. Tara shared that the Middle Sound Loop Trail is going well and
is actually ahead of schedule. The new and improved playground at Northern Regional Park has been
completed and is officially open. The new features are beginning to be installed at Ogden Park
playground. Landscape improvements were recently made near the baseball fields and dog park areas
by staff. At the Pages Creek Preserve site, the house has been taken down and grading for the parking
area has begun. Also went out to the location with the County Engineering department to find out the
GPS points. Staff is working with the IT department to improve our mobile app and website to make it
easier for citizens to make reservations. The goal is to have the improvements up and running in time
for the busy spring season.
Andy shared that the fall athletic season has been completed.

Turf Discussion.
2. Bruce Shell shared that the County Commissioners asked the board to make a
recommendation regarding the use of turf vs grass. He asked that an impact study be completed with
information regarding the number of fields, how they are utilized, assessment of the fields and what
staff recommends be done with the fields moving forward. (Due to the busy schedule of staff during
the holidays, the impact study will be presented at the February meeting.)
