2018-07-24 Minutes Meeting Minutes New Hanover County/City of Wilmington Community Relations Advisory Committee NHC Library 101 Chestnut Street, Harnett Room July 24, 2018 5:30 PM Committee Members Present: Owen Wexler, Kristen McKeithan, Jeff Hovis, Evelyn Bryant, Emily Cottrell, Kathy King, Elise Rocks, Florence Warren, Lori Wainright, Jen Johnson, Melanie Frank and Chuck Davis. Guest speakers: Mebane Boyd, Resiliency Task Force Staff: Suzanne Rogers, City Liaison; Tim Burgess, NHC; Dahria Kianpour, NHC Citizens: Iris Baker, NHRMC; Donald McKoy; Kerriona Jones; Mina Yakubu I. Call to Order Owen called the meeting to order. Quorum established. Everyone introduced themselves. Brief discussion about using a larger room to better accommodate members of the public in attendance. II. Approve Agenda Evelyn moved approval of May 22■ŕ and June 16 th Minutes as presented. Rev. Davis seconded and the motion carried. IV. Guest: Lori introduced Mebane Boyd, Coordinator for the Resilience Task Force. Mebane shared information about the Resilience Task Force showed a Ted Talk about the impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and changes needed to address the negative impact of ACEs on children, families, neighborhoods and communities. Discussion among those present ensued with some points as follows: - assessment without resources. -city schools, go into the neighborhoods, go where people are, public housing, churches, etc. Coordinate with NHRMC Northside Community Health Assessment and other outreach efforts Make sure the Task Force has grassroots representatives Be real with students, be transparent able to those with limited reading Contact Mebane at Meban@ciscapefear.org V. Committee Reports Crisis Management No meeting in July. Melanie ask if any new members want to join. Elise Rocks volunteered. Programming & Public Education (joint meeting). Lori reported conference call meeting with UNCW Professors working on Survey project. Jen asked to look into including question about disabled access. More information on survey project forthcoming. VI. Unfinished Business NHC Outside Agency Funding: Melanie went to meeting of NHC Committee on Outside Agency funding, the meeting was canceled. Discussion about the need for representative membership on committee. Discussion of letter to NHC Commission to request committees members are representative of all segments of the community. Implicit Bias Training Next Steps: Discussion about next steps in recommending Implicit Bias Training. Melanie made a motion that CRAC recommend the City of Wilmington and New Hanover County provide Implicit Bias training for staff and officials throughout the organizations. The training starts with elected officials and executive management to demonstrate importance and commitment. Kathy seconded the motion. Discussion about how to make recommendation, as stand-alone letter or as part of report to include other recommendations and findings from Survey, etc. This lead to a discussion about the need for policies and procedures. Owen moved to form an Ad hoc committee to draft Policies & Procedures. Evelyn seconded. Members volunteered: Jeff, Ref. Davis, and Evelyn. VI. New Business: Jen asked members to please send information to her about guest speakers if you are coordinating or other information that she will compile to send to City to post on social media. VIII. Adjourn: meeting adjourned on motion by Rev. Davis.
