Minutes 12.12.2019 ( Corrected Final Minutes)NEW HANOVER COUNTY MANAGER’S OFFICE / DRAFT Meeting Minutes NEW HANOVER COUNTY COMMISSION ON AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY, HERITAGE & CULTURE (NHCAAHHC or Commission) Finance Conference Room 500, New Hanover County Government Center December 12, 2019 – 4:00 PM Committee Members Present: Brenda Fong, Bernice Johnson, Manuel Lloyd, Tonia McKoy, Deborah Maxwell, Angela Gaines, Linda Thomas, Sandra Oglesby, Cynthia Pershia and J’vanete Skiba. Ex-Officio –Jan Davidson, Historian. Absent: Christopher Eaton, Bernice Johnson, Travis Souther, Stephanie Walker, and George Vlasits. Staff Present: Tufanna Bradley, Assistant County Manager. I. Call to Order Chairman Lloyd called the meeting to order at 4:00pm. Quorum established. Chairman Lloyd welcomed Ms. Cynthia Pershia to the commission. II. Approve Agenda – Brenda Fong motioned to approve the agenda; Deborah Maxwell seconded. Motion passed. III. Approve Minutes – Angela Gaines motioned to approve the November 14, 2019; Deborah Maxwell seconded. Motion passed. IV. Public Comments – None. V. Old Business – Chairman Lloyd added Ms. Fong to the Research Committee. Committee Break Outs Cemetery – The Cemetery Committee will plan a spring event and ensure New Hanover County waivers are signed of any volunteers. The Committee will also work with Bambie Karabin on guidelines for volunteers and the promotional video. Education – The full committee was not present, however, J’vanete Skiba agreed to contact committee members to schedule a meeting to create SMART goals to get the committee on track with the other committees. Outreach – The committee will add Cynthia Pershia, and the committee will attend the MLK, Jr. Business Expo on January 13, 2020, and the Potluck for Peace on January 16, 2020. Research – Ms. McKoy informed the commission that the Research Committee will be including churches in their research. She also stated that it has been hard to find African American businesses operating in the unincorporated county. However, they plan to work from past to present and narrow searches by zip codes. Also, some of the difficulty is that businesses can be in the city or the county in one zip code. They will also be getting information, advice and assistance from the African American Business Council and the Greater Wilmington Chamber of Commerce. VI. New Business Mission Statement – Tufanna created a draft statement for the commission to review and edit, members not in attendance will receive the draft statement via email along with the meeting minutes. The statement will be approved at the January 9, 2020 meeting. Logo – Chairman Lloyd is still working on a logo and will send two or three options by the next meeting. Name Tags – The name tags will be created after the logo has been created and approved. Possible Speaker, Guest or Presentation for next meeting – Jan Davidson will present at the January 9, 2020 meeting. VIII. Announcements – A. The Commission will have a table at the January 18, 2020, NAACP MLK, Jr. Breakfast sponsored by New Hanover County; members need to send an email to Tufanna Bradley indicating that they want to attend, however, there are only 7 seats available. B. On January 18th at 2:00 pm in the New Hanover Room at the downtown Library author, David Zucchino will speak about his book “Wilmington’s Lie: The Murderous Coup of 1898 and the Rise of White Supremacy. The books will be on sale. C. On January 22, 2020, Susan Taylor will be speaking at a MLK, Jr. service. D. On February 23, 2020, UNCW’s Upperman African American Cultural Center will host a Black History Month Quiz Bowl and Visual Art Competition, more information to come. E. In February 2020 in honor of Black History Month, the Cape Fear Museum will host a Program to recognize and honor African American County Commissioners since 1868; a date and more specifics to come. IX. Adjourn – Chairman Lloyd Adjourned the meeting at 5:01 pm.
