The New Hanover County Board of Health met on Wednesday, June 4,
1986, at the New Hanover County Health Department.

Department Focal:
Michael Rhodes, Environmental Health Director, introduced norian
~. Dixon, sanitarian, who is involved in the air monitoring program.
Since the Soviet Nuclear Accident, the air monitoring program has
been very active. norian reported that the sampling that is being
done for the Environmental protection Agency (EPA) is entirely
voluntary on the part of the New Hanover County Health Department.
The supplies used for sampling are furnished by EPA. norian also
told the Board that air and rain samples are collected for the
State on a regular basis from equipment which has been placed on
top of the Health Department building.
Budget Committee Report: Mr. Durham reported that the county
Commissioners approved the Health Department's 1986-87 budget as
presented by the Board. He also said that the request for a nurse
in the Jail budget is still being considered.
July Board of Health Meeting: Mrs. Credle told the Board a
suggestion had been made that instead of having the regular format
for the July meeting, the Board discuss plans for the future in an
informal setting. After discussion, it was decided by general
consensus that the idea is very good, but July is a bad month to
try to have a meeting of this sort. It was suggested that this
possibly be an evening meeting and perhaps in the Fall.
The July meeting was postponed until July 9, 1986 since the
regular meeting time falls during the week of July 4.

Revised Family Planning Fee Scale for FY 86-87: Mr. parker gave
Board Members a copy of the new Federal Fee Scale for Family
planning. This scale was not received until after the Board
packets had been mailed and since we must begin using it on July
1, 1986, Mr. Parker requested that it be approved by the Board at
this meeting. There was a general discussion of the Fee Scales
used in the Department and why we use so many different Fee
Scales. After the discussion, Dr. Roseman moved that the Federal
Fee Scale for Family Planning be approved as presented. Mr.
Strickland seconded the motion and it carried unanimously.

He also introduced Health Educator Intern Maria Morgan, who is
working with Sharon Mault this summer in the Health promotion
Division. Maria is a student at UNC, Chapel Hill.
