The New Hanover Coun ty Board of Heal th met on wednesday, July 1,
1987 at the Health Department.
Members Present:

Mr. Strickland called the meeting to order at 8:00 A.M. and called
for corrections to the minutes of June 3, 1987. Dr. Leonard moved
the minutes be approved as presented. Dr. Goins seconded the
motion and it carried unanimously.
Department Focal:
Children's Special Health Services: Cynthia R. Johnson, PHN,
presented an overview of the Children's Special Health Services
(CSHS) formerly known as the Crippled Children's Program. This
program was presented to give the Board information on services
available to children in our community.

Mr. Durham seconded the
Continuing Education for Board of Health Members: Emily
Rivenbark, from the Area Health Education Center spoke to the
Board regarding plans for several meetings she is planning for
Board of Health members. She asked for input from Board Members.
Annual Meeting for Former Board of Health Members Discussed: Mr.
Strickland asked members of the Board for their opinions on having
an annual meeting for former Board of Health members like the one
held in 1986. In general Board of Health members felt this should
be an annual event. Several former Board members had also
requested that an annual meeting be held. Mr. Str ickland
appointed Dr. Al Roseman as Chairman of Arrangements for this
year's meeting.

himsel f. The picture was made while the Governor was here for
Public Health Week.
Health Director's Comments:
AIDS Task Force Being Formed: Mr. Parker told the Board that the
Health Department is taking the lead in forming a Southeastern
North Carolina AIDS Task Force to address education and health
issues concerning AIDS. The first meeting will be held on July
27, 1987 at 7:00 P.M. at the Health Department.
Update on Legislative Bills: Mr. Parker gave a brief update on
Bills now pending in the North Carolina General Assembly.
Reports on Aedes Albopictus Mosquito: Bobby Wa ters reported that
he has identified the Adese Albapectus Mosquito in our area. This
mosqui to carries Dengue Fever, often called "Break Bone Fever".
Symptoms of the fever, given by Dr. Pappas, are high fever,
headache, and muscle aches.
