REGULAR MONTHLY MEETING, BOARD OF HEALTH
HELD IN OFFICE OF BOARD
September 13, 1939
,,,'~
Present: Chairman Addison Hewlett, Mayor Thomas Cooper,
Dr. J. C. Wessell, Dr. W. Houston Moore, and Dr. B. R. Morrison.
Mr. J. W. GriBe was present by invitation because of the fact that
Mr. Roland was out of town and the Board had been asked to rule on
whether or not the Forest Hills School should be closed on account
of infantile paralysis.
Minutes of last meeting were read and approved.
The monthly reports were presented by the Health Officer.
After a general discussion of the infantile paralysis situation,
regarding the Forest Hills School, the Health Officer was instructed to
call by long distance Dr. M. J. Rosenau and Dr. J. C. Knox for advice
as to whether or not this school should be closed. Both of these authorities
advised avainst closing the school. Thereafter, it was moved by Mayor Cooper,
seconaed by Dr. Wessell, that the Forest Hills School be not closed as
there were only two cases of infantile paralysis in rural New Hanover county
and nOBe in the city and neither of the two cases had attended school.
Carried.
The Health Officer was instructed to notify the public through the
press of the advice received from Drs. Rosenau and Knox, and that the
Board of Health would watch the situation very closely and close the school
immediately if this disease threatened to become epidemic.
The Health Officer informed the Board that Mr. Cumber had asked permission
to use non-resident plumbers in the F. H. A. buildings for which he has a
contract, He asked this because of the fact that it would be totally impossible
to secure enough locally licensed plumbers for this work. The Board agreed
that this concession be made, provided the non-resident men used had been
properly licensed in their own localities.
There being no further business, the Board adjourned.
