01/14/1943 153 REGULAR MONTHLY MEETING IlOARD OF HEALTH HELD IN OFFICE OF BOARD JANUARY 14, 1943 , Present: Mr. Hewlett, Dr. Moore, Dr. Wessell, 1~. Roland, lJayor Yow and Dr. Morrison. The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. The Health Officer presented the monthly reports. After a general discussion of the pasteurization of milk, 1~. Marsden Bellamy, County Attorney, recomnended that the Board draw up and or- dinance making it illegal after October 1, 1943, to sell any milk except pasteurized in New Hanover County. On this suggestion it was moved by Dr. '/[essell, seconded by Dr. Moore, that the ordinance pro- hibiting the sale of raw milk be drawn up to become effective October I, 1943. Carried. Dr. Wessell reported for the com:iittee appointed to make recommenda- tions regarding a letter from the County Commissioners requesting the Board to employ a full time veterinarian. The cornnlittee's report was that a full time competent veterinarian was out of the question for the duration and the committee recomnended that Dr. Huffman continue with the department on a part time basis as consultant on meats, dogs, foods and dai::Hes and that his contract with the Board continue in effect throughout the rest of the fiscal year. Dr. Wessell put this in the form of a motion which was seconded by Dr. Moore. Carried. At the request of the Health Officer, the Board ruled that beginning with the next school year contacts be permitted to continue in school from homes in which diphtheria is quarantined, it being understood that we give publicity to this now and also at the preschool clinics and that the schick tests be made available to school children shortly before school opens each fall. ,", After a brief discussion of the problem of follow-up on selectees with venereal disease, it was moved by Dr. Moore and seconded by Dr. Morrison that the follow-up worker of the venereal disease department see that selectees with venereal disease take their treatments regularly and that any cases failing to take treatments regularly be taken to court. Carried. The Health Officer assured the Board members that this was supposed to be in full effect at present, but that he would report definitely at the ,nex,t meeting. The Health Officer reported that the WPA was discontinuing the service of the highschool nurse effective about the 1st of April and asked the 154 Board whether or not the appropriating authorities should be requested to provide funds for this nurse for the rest of the fiscal year accord- ing to a provisional budget item carried each year for several years. After a brief discussion, the Chairman recommended that the present budget be studied and see if this nurse could be paid out of any surplus funds. ~ """ There being no further business the meeting adjourned.
