On motion by Dr. Wessell, seconded by Dr. Smith, the reading of the
minutes of the last meeting was omitted. Carried.
The Health Officer reported to the Board that he had had Mr. Glover, Sanitarian,
contact all shoe stores known to have shoe-fitting fluoroscopes for the purpose
of determining whether or not they plan to continue using fluoroscopic means
of shoe-fitting. Three of the knoWll stores stated they had discontinued the
use of their equiJXllent. Mr. Joe Simon showed no spirit of cooperation in the
matter of discontinuance of this practice which this Board and the State Board
of Health deems dangerous both to the people whose shoes are fitted and to the
operators of these devices. After a thorough discussion; motion was made by
Dr. Knox, seconded by Dr. Smith, that we contact Charlotte and other places
where action has been taken and ask that they supply us samples of ordinances
so that this Board may take action in this matter at an early date. Carried.

After a lengthy discussion of the Asian flu and vaccine; motion was made by
Dr. Knox, seconded by Dr. Wessell, that the health department be authorized
to administer the Asian flu vaccine to City and County personnel (not including
dependents) if or provided further that it is the responsibility of the City or
County Agency to secure and bear the cost of the vaccine. Carried.
It was the concensus of the Boa.rd that if Asian flu should reach epidemic proportion
here that the problem could be met at that time. It was further suggested that in
the case of federal employees they contact the U. S. Public Health Service
physician here.

Dr. Knox, seconded by Dr. Wessell, giving permission to break down the contingent
item in the budget to take care of miscellaneous expenditures. Carried.
Following the regular Board meeting, a party had been arranged in honor of Dr.
John C. Wessell to commerate his eightieth birthday and his forty-first year as
a member of the Board of Health. Dr. Knox presented him with a gift from the
Health Department personnel and the Board members and called to the attention
of the group the many years of valuable service Dr. Wessell has rendered to the
community at a persona~ sacrifice to himself. In Dr. Wessell's response he thanked
the group for the gift, their very kind thoughtfulness and in doing so he lIIentioned
the one thing that was very dear to his heart; his connection with the building
and operation for many years of the Red Cross Sanatorium which rendered such a
fine service to the tubercular patients of this area.
