The Cape Fear Museum Advisory Board held its regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, September 16, 2020 via TEAMS. The meeting was called to order by Donna Pope at 4:05 pm.
Consideration of Absences: Donna Pope
Bogan, Dixon, Moon, and White have been excused.
Sheryl Kelly, the new Assistant County Manager joined the meeting and took a moment to introduce herself to the group.
Approval of Minutes: Donna Pope
A motion to accept the July 15, 2020 minutes was made by Pope, seconded by Warren and approved without opposition.
Chairman’s Report: Donna Pope
Pope mailed the letter from the last meeting to the Board of the Commissioners. She did receive a thank you letter from Commissioner Zapple. She plans to attend the upcoming Commissioner
meetings to advocate for the Museum.
All the committee assignments have been made and were sent to everyone view email.
Associates Report: Sheryl Mays for Emily Bogan
The associates have given all members a six-month extension on their membership due to our closure. All members will be receiving their new card in the mail.
The fundraising committee is meeting tonight to discuss fundraising efforts for the upcoming year.
Collections Report: Kevin Maurer
The Collections Committees reviewed accessions to be submitted to the NHC Board of Commissioners for approval. Many of which were COVID-19 related. Others surrounded the protests (i.e.
Hugh McCray Park and Alexander Manley Park signs).
Because it was by committee, no motion or second was needed to accept the accessions. It was approved without opposition.
Marketing and Visitor Engagement Report: Susan Barbee
The committee is looking into ways to promote the two current exhibits, Fighting for the Right to Fight and Hometown Teams, and the upcoming Water Exhibit.
The committee will be meeting monthly in hopes to be more active as they are developing.
Museum Report: Sheryl Mays
Mays sent out a Summer News email this past week. Please let her know if you did not receive it.
The museum officially opened on September 8th. We had 280 visitors in our first week back open.
The museum is continuing to increase our virtually programming. Since March it has had 115,000 views on Facebook. This virtual programming will continue as we begin to provide on site
programming again.
There is a Smithsonian member talk on this Friday – everyone was encouraged to participate.
International Observe the Moon Night will be held virtually this year. It will begin at 7pm on September 26th. We created 50 kits to go along with that programming – all 50 were reserved
in one day! A few were kept aside for underserved community members.
The museum is the last stop on the Hometown Teams exhibit tour. We are able to keep this exhibit and reuse the physical pieces – not the intellectual property.
We are in the midst of researching an exhibit on Fire. Both the history and science. We are hoping to open this in-house exhibit in November 2021.
Mays shared a video created by NHCTV about the current Fighting for the Right to Fight exhibit.
A motion was made by Pope, and seconded by Barbee, to adjourn the meeting. With unanimous consent, the meeting ended at 4:30 pm.
The next board meeting will be held on Wednesday, November 18th at 4:00 pm Virtually via Cape Fear Museum.
